Just a plea to put in the channel number when you post about a show. Please! Your favorite channel's number may be unknown to some.

That's a little difficult, DIRECTV, Dish, TWC, Comcast....

Opinions expressed by me are my own and do not necessarily reflect
those of DBSTalk.com, DIRECTV, Dish Network, or any other company.

Oh, dang, completely forgot about that. :nono2:

Though we're really only talking two DBS providers, no?

This is merely a thread to feed the Calendar. All the shows on the Calendar (to my knowledge) display the network - which as Scott mentioned are different channels per provider.

I really don't think members should research what channel something's on for each provider before posting (or that Scott should do it post).

I'm sure Directv can't wait to get their hands on your unit.

It would take one second to add the channel number for the show of one's own provider. That would be very useful to at least half the readership.

But I understand why some will resist this simple courtesy.

Can't believe I'm having this discussion with you.

Where do you get 1 second?

I have no idea what channel any of the networks are. If I had to post that for each show, I'd have to look it up, as would many of the other people that are posting shows. And then to be "courteous", have to look it up for Dish Network too (not to mention the fact that there are members here that have other providers too - FIOS, TW, etc.).

Should we look up the local channel number for every DMA on the major networks?

That takes 1 second?

Wouldn't even be worth posting the information anymore, which is in and of itself a "courtesy" to the rest of the members - because the member going out of his way to post it, already knows it.

And why do you think it would be useful to anyone else? It certainly wouldn't be useful for me. I see a show to watch, I smart search it and add a SL. The channel "number" never even comes into play, and it's rare that the Network name even comes into play.

If it's that difficult, start finding out for yourself when things premiere or JUST look up the channel number yourself.

If you really want to be courteous, thank the members that post information on upcoming shows for the benefit of the rest of the forum.

I'm sure Directv can't wait to get their hands on your unit.

TVGUIDE.com can maybe better serve you for channel listings
This is just a thread of well meaning people helping each other out as we get older to remember things we need to record. :)

I believe the helpfulness is what I was focussing on. It takes but a second to put in the number for the service you have, as you already know it, presumably. I would take less than a minute to look up what Dish, for example, has for that channel number. The one minute you, or I (but not Scott!) or another takes saves hundreds of folk the same amount of time- a net group savings of several hours.

But, as I said, it'd be a courtesy, and as I was reminded this serves both DBS groups, I'd modify that to include just the number you already know.

I find it very strange that you would presume that the people posting about a show would know the channel number it's on, whereas you do not (while I haven't posted nearly the number of shows that others have, I certainly wouldn't have known any of the channel numbers), and that your time (in looking it up) is more valuable than theirs (in doing the same).

I also find it strange that you would think others would want the channel numbers (net group savings). I still can't even understand how it's relevant or why you would want to know it.

You also didn't respond with what to do about ABC, NBC, CBS, etc. Aren't those different in every DMA? Should they all be listed as a courtesy?

Appreciate the courteous modification though, in only asking members to spend their time looking up the channel number on another satellite service. :nono2::rolleyes:

The debate should be moved to a separate thread. As well as all the comments on the topic. This is just a reminder page for a mod to update the calendar.

If someone wants to get creative, maybe someone could make a reference chart that shows all channels and all providers with their channel numbers. Like an excel file.

Or is that a limited view of how many companies and their combinations are out there?

If someone was willing to make a chart similar to the Acronyms chart that is in the Tips and Resources forum that included all of the DIRECTV and Dish channels I can get you the template and find a place to put it when we are finished, then if you would like to look it up or include both in your information post it can be added to the calendar that way.

I can assure you I won't be looking up every channel number before adding shows to the calendar, I simply don't have the time nor can I even remember the channel numbers of DIRECTV.

Suggestion: 4 lines of information on the chart starting with DIRECTV channels from 0-9999 with the Dish channel next to it and then the Dish channels from 0-9999 with the DIRECTV channel next to it.

Adding the channel number would not increase my enjoyment of the calendar. :P

I wouldn't need a channel number in the DBSTalk calendar, but I could see where it would be convenient to others.

If I can't remember the actual channel number I just go to Titan TV, press CONTROL-F and start typing the letters from the channel name - and I'm taken to the channel number.

Yes, in fact, that's what I do. (Only onna Mac it's Cmd-F)

A couple of real negative takes on this tweak, and a few insults as well!
Of course I do not mean networks. Of course I do not mean for Scott ever to do this.

Should I happen across a new show before anyone else, I will try to follow my suggestions as a courtesy only, knowing that several people will not find it helpful, but confident some will.

And I am grateful for those who post here, and the work Scott does to keep it rolling. And thanks, Drew, for a helpful and polite reply.

I must vote no.

It would be one hell of a pain looking up channels for every service in order to report a start or return of program.

Wow, did this suggestion/idea/request ever go badly- for some, at least. My bad.

I was thinking that for the most part, guys posting shows would be doing so for those they wanted to watch, and would know the channel number of the non-networked things. Apparently not!

So, in the words of our friends in the syndicate, "fahgedddaabbouddit".

Should I have used source instead of network? I guess there are folks who only consider the big 4 as networks and I guess maybe that's correct. I was referring to all sources such as SyFy, HBO, Showtime, etc. Even an old man like me knows the source of the programs he watches while he may not recall the exact channel numbers. And I have seen sources referred to in numerous posts regarding new and returning programs.

Any volunteers? I would say just DIRECTV and Dish, side by side maybe all the channels in alphabetical order. Let me know if interested on taking this on, I can hook you up with the template. :D

I think it's clear that Laxguy should do it, since he's the only one that needs to know the channel number (for reasons I still don't know).

Is it really necessary to keep singling Laxguy out like this? He made a request to add channel numbers to the posts in the reminder thread, but from what I see it was his idea it would be for the betterment of the forum, not out of a desire to cause extra work for people. He got shot down fairly quickly, and sometimes pretty harshly, so why keep piling on?
