Regarding Hogan not wanting to wear a number, the announcer was right. I am a 1/2 century PGA pro and in 1946 I caddied for Ben Hogan during the All American Open at Tam O'Shanter CC, Niles, IL.. I earned the honor of caddying for him again in the same tournament in 1947, but because George May insisted that all players wear numbers on their back, Mr. Hogan did not show up. I was devastated. They held the World's Championship at Tam O'Shanter three months later and the caddy master assigned me to Mr. Hogan. He won the tournament. I thought you might find this bit of trivia interesting.
