If I buy an unlocked smartphone and do not contract with any carrier, can I still use that phone with the wifi from my home network even without a SIM card installed?

Yes you can. In fact I took my sim card out of my Galaxy SGII to answer your question.
Thanks to Google search, people can appear to be smarter than they really are.

Great! Thanks for the replies. I don't have much of a need for a non-smartphone since I don't like to spend a lot of time on the phone. I never paid much attention to cell phones until the smartphones hit the market with their GPS, cameras, apps and so on. I have a mobile hotspot I keep in the car to use with my Xoom tablet, and two other gadgets that receive wifi. I have the TextPlus app on two of them for texting, and I can also talk on it if I have to -- 100 minutes for $1.99, and they never expire. That's all nice but it would be nicer to have the TextPlus app, a camera, GPS, etc. all on one gadget. Guess I'll start Googling for unlocked HG's, Motorolas or Sammys.

Thanks again for the info.
