As I recall Trio was more of a PBS type format.

TRIO, A&E and BRAVO all started out as upscale commercial versions of PBS. For awhile, A&E got much of it's programming from the UK, while Trio was a bit more diverse with Canadian, Aussie and other sources. This was natural since one of the original investors was the CBC. And if I recall correctly, Bravo had a lot of art, dance, ballet and opera.

But the programmers quickly realized that the audience for this type of entertainment was pretty small.

Trio tried a number of formats - international programming, lots of British comedies, Brilliant But Cancelled, etc, etc, NBC ended up with control of the network but eventually pulled the plug. The Brilliant But Cancelled concept stayed on as a website and, as I recall, used for a short time on Bravo.

For more on Trio, check out the Trio TV Wiki page

Trio was one of the channels that convinced me to switch from Time Warner cable to Directv back in '99.

Different laws (less "effective" lobbyists?). In addition to US locals from a few different cities, they can also get locals from various provinces. OTOH, their simsub rules have been known to be a PITA for some customers.

they also get the local wgn with out blackouts
I want CLTV / CLTV HD on direct tv.

This is off topic, but I really enjoy TCM HD and was wondering why TCM on demand (1256) has only 5 movies available for download? With such a vast library, why isn't more made available?

When will DIY HD be available for live streaming in the mobile apps? Was So sick of HGTV's reality focused programming today when I was in my office. DIY is more factual IMO than HGTV. Love the network, just hope it comes to live streaming soon.

This is one thing I never understood, Canada can get all our channels and shows but we can't get any of theirs.

We have Hollywood they don't. Hollywood wants their stuff everywhere, and are not all that inviting of others here, unless they are the ones distributing it. It's all about the money.

If you ask me, DirecTV on demand is still in its infancy. Just look at HBO, it just become very useful in the last month or so, mirroring HBO go. It's all contracts and infrastructure...

Discovery Communications isn't going to help there. They only distribute BBC America because BBC America didn't want to set everything up from scratch themselves.

What would need to happen FIRST, is CBC launching a "CBC USA" channel, and then seeking a distribution partner in the United States.

It should be able to happen though. I have friends and family in Ontario in several places, and on their local cable systems they have American networks (NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox, etc) from the Detroit DMA and Buffalo DMA. Even in Toronto, where the terrestrial reception of anything American is really only possible on the south-west side of town, all of the Buffalo DMA stations are on their cable systems.

Even where you can't receive it, it is on Bell Satellite

As you can see under the American channels, they picked a number of border DMA's and distribute them on their satellite system for reception across all of Canada. (You get whatever is closest to you).

I don't see why they wouldn't be able to do the same on DirecTV. A "Canada Package" with a ET and a PT set of locals - e.g. Toronto and Vancouver - which you can subscribe to, even if it is just the CTV/CBC/CityTV/Global/Omni affiliates, just like they can get the NBC/CBS/FOX/ABC/CW affiliates.

Likewise, we get CBC on basic cable in Buffalo, or over the air. I think a sticking point nationally, would be in what is allowed on TV. Certain amounts of nudity and swearing that only excludes the F-bomb after 9 pm? I think a midwest PTA member's head might explode if it were distributed nationally.

Most likely due to this quarter coming to a close, but it was a pretty good one.

Hopefully, the 4th quarter will bring as many additions.

Easily my favorite post in this whole thread.

I had no idea what the word "SCHNEID" meant. I did a search, expecting the answer come from the Urban Dictionary and be some hip term I was too old to know.

It was a joy to find out that "off the schneid" is a baseball term meaning to stop a losing streak, and even better, comes from the Yiddish word "schneider" for tailor, or "one who cuts the cloth".

I wonder if this is related to the fact that in many card games a "schneider" is to beat someboy that got zero points. In Gin Rummy (for money), the stakes would be "penny a point, dollar a game and double for a schneider"

Probably right. One of the other definitions I found referenced cards. I can't remember the context but I'd bet this is it.

Several of the most requested/anticipated channels have been added this year, so one can expect a less frequented thread, and now that IONEHD is available, we have no national channel in testing, nor any rumors of upcoming ones.

TWC SportsNet launches next Monday, but it has it's own thread at this time, so some anticipation is taking place there.

Speaking for myself, I'll be ranting about CW HD-DNS this weekend given that their first Season Premiere is next Tuesday (I've warned folks that my rant would be coming by then multiple times, so no complaints!).

Aside from that, a topic of discussion that interests me, or better yet, a channel appearing in testing, I expect to be a casual viewer of the thread this week. :)

I don't agree with the first statement.

D* delivers more full time RSNs then part time.

Full time
FS Arizona
FS Detroit
FS Florida
FS Midwest
FS North
FS South
FS Southwest
FS West
Prime Ticket
Root Sports Rocky Mtn
Root Sports Pittsburgh
Root Sports Northwest
Comcast Bay Area
Comcast California
Comcast Chicago
Comcast Mid Atlantic
Comcast New England
YES
NESN
Altitude
MSG
MSG Plus
Sports South
SNY

The part time ones are only a handful and games only. There are exceptions like the ones you mentioned, but most of the RSNs are in HD and full time.

But people in Oklahoma, Houston, Louisiana, Arkansas, and N. Mexico actually get FSN Southwest HD as the main feed, with FSN Oklahoma, Houston, etc. as a territorial thing.

In Ohio, FSN Ohio is NOT in HD at all except for the previously mentioned games.

I was familiar with the term, but not the spelling. In my usage, it'd mean any breaking of a bad streak (winless/scoreless/goalless) or initial points/runs/hits whatever.

I'd have spelled it "snide", and if you google "off the snide" you'll find a lot of other people would too, but I accept the Yiddish origin and appropriate spelling (I'll try to remember that for the future).
LR(non-CE): HR44, Mits 65C9; Office/FR (CE): HR22-100 + AM21, Mits 60737 + Mits 3DA1 3D adapter. Spare bedroom (non-CE), HR23. Genie WHDVR, wireless networking (yay!)

Full House in my bar on Sunday for the NFL, and the Yankees...Day 1 with NFL Network's RED-ZONE on TWC...GULP DIDNT deliver!!

TWC didn't turn on RZ and NFLN till the evening.

However it was anticipated and expected, that nothing would go live till this Thursday's game per print media. They all touted that the 27th was NYC light up day.. Wasn't gonna cave-in and put myself back into a $300+ pinch to turn on my commercial pricing for ST..I'll wait 1 more week for TWC's Red-Zone!!

Anticipation...noting but anticipation !!

Given the addition of more HBO channels last year, access to HBO Go, and the vastly improved HBO On Demand...there is a new reason to be happy with choosing DirecTV:

Apparently Dish Network is raising their HBO subscription fee $2, to $18.
