If you look at Sixto's Most Excellent Historical Records of Directv Channel Changes Q4 does look fairly quiet for HD additions.

SonyHD was added in Q4 2010, so it's not out of the question. And with all the rebalancing of transponders and such, there's hope that the wizards behind the curtain are making more room for things that will amaze and astound us. So keep your fingers crossed that October will be as boundiful as July and August were.

Well... many contracts end on the first of the year (and I believe this year it is Discovery Communications and CBS, so we may see a bunch of mudslinging right after Christmas) and that might have something to do with it. They will have already started preliminary negotiations and new HD that might be part of upcoming contracts might just be put on hold until the contracts are secured again.

Since Discovery Communications is coming up..... OWN, Investigation Discovery, and The Hub are three stations (and perhaps more, I didn't do a lot of investigating) that are owned or operated by Discovery Communications, and currently only in SD on DirecTV. It isn't unrealistic to think that Discovery might attempt to secure HD coverage of these networks during negotiations.
[Disclaimer] The definition of "soon" is based solely on DirecTV's interpretation of the word, and all similarities with dictionary definitions of the word "soon" are purely coincidental and should not be interpreted as a time frame that will come to pass within a reasonable amount of time.

I am the Stig.

Yeah there is another one. Although I doubt that contract negotiations will automatically mean *all* channels will go to HD. Some probably will, but not all. Not sure which.... I'd like OWN for my wife, but the network wasn't doing too well financially earlier this year ($330 million losses since launch so far) but is on track to become profitable in the 4th Quarter 2012.

The Military Channel does not yet exist in HD. It would be on my list of wanted channels if it existed in HD, but so far, it only exists in 480i.

Yes, and according to your Wikipedia links, neither exist in HD yet.

I like the show, too. The regular History channel has a new episode on Friday October 5th. The new episodes starting on Saturday on H2 will be on H1 the following Friday.
If you stop responding to them or put them on ignore, then eventually they'll go away.

I'd like to see H2 next.

Me too. That would complete my HD wishes. Just found out that instead of the local ION being in HD, we have IONW in HD. I'm happy with that since it's all the same programming. I won't ask for more since you all know what they say. Give a person a ride, and he wants to drive.

They are re-showing the detective series Luther on BBC America. I noticed that they gave it an hour, which includes 15 minutes of commercials, for a running time of 45 minutes. I then looked at downloads of Luther to see how long the actual running time is, and it is 53 minutes. So they have to cut out 8 full minutes of the story to get it into an hour.

This is just program butchery. Taking 8 minutes out of a detective program makes the story line incomprehensible, since too much is missing. I cannot understand how this can be allowed.

Any other BBC produced hour programs would receive the same butchery. If it is an ITV produced program, they have commercials in England, so you may see the whole program, but not those produced by the BBC in England.

The show "Copper" is made for BBC America, so that is made with the commercials included, thus, that would be complete.

My local ION and IONW are still both SD. How is it that you get IONW in HD?

It all depends on how they got those extra eight minutes. Many shows in syndication are digitally speed up so that no actual content is lost. For example, if a 53 minute program is played back at 34.5 frames per second instead of 30 frames per second, it would run only 45 minutes. The software that is used, though is more sophisticated than that. It actually removes pauses between words, the transitions on scene changes, and some of the "beauty shots" (like the panoramic shots before they zoom in on what is really important) before and after the planned commercial breaks to gain time for additional commercials.

Rush Limbaugh made a big deal about the removal of pauses when his show was syndicated, because he said that he intentionally paused between words for dramatic effect. In reality, pauses like that are shortened, but not removed entirely. Most people do not notice the difference, but over the span of 53 minutes, it is easy to cut 8 minutes without removing content.

On the other hand, some programs are chopped, and I agree with you that to do so for a detective program would be unacceptable. I watched Hoosiers on Reelz several weeks ago, and they did delete several entire scenes. Even though Hoosiers was not a mystery, it is a crime that they butchered it.

Re: Luther --The other thing you have to take into consideration, is when the producers know it is going to be done, they can make some allowances for scripting around it. Maybe not perfectly, but it does make a difference.

Agreed, and especially to SR and SIXTO for all their input. Here's hoping for yet more HD additions this quarter.

Any idea when their contract ends on Fox Soccer Plus? That's ripe for renegotiation... they're still on the old Setanta monthly fee. It seems most other companies now offer it within their sports packs, instead of the additional premium.
