I know cypherx will be happy about this one I think it was #1 on his wishlist. :)

Me personally, I would rather have DIY, fuse, style, We, oxygen, cooking, H2, ID, HLN and LMN in HD. Then I don't think we'd have to watch SD ever again. Well, until my first kid is born in November... We will be stuck with sprout and a few other kids channels in SD.

The wife has been watching DIY HD for a while now on DISH (yes we sub to both), nice to see D* 'should' be launching this one soon, and of course in better picture quality!
Each new addition slowly chips down the amount of difference between the two services we have. If the following HD were added we could probably make do with just D*:
GSN (Watched A LOT at our house)
LMN (Wife watches this one A LOT)
ID
Cooking
HLN
H2
OWN
EPIX (We could do without the linear channels if we wanted since the EPIXHD.com Online Streaming is included with our Internet service, but the picture quality is better with DISH then the streaming)

I'll run another poll in Q4.

It would be very helpful if someone will create a list of every HD channel that should be in the poll.

Only HD channels that actually exist today, or will be available within the next few months.

Refer to Alan Gordon's list early in the quarterly "HD Anticipation" thread.

I believe all of those are locals only. No cable/satellite channel. They are subchannel nets and not in HD.

Alan - minor edit - I think it's called OuterMax, not OutMax.

OuterMax is Cinemax's channel focused on scifi/horror/fantasy. OutMax, sounds like something more targeted at the Logo audience.

Or does it mean "Strike Up The Band?"

:icon_band

For another upcoming HD channel launch like ION East or perhaps "launches" of that one to live along with others in test?

  • CSS

I'm not aware of D* carrying the full time CSS channel SD or HD at all. They do carry some college football/basketball games that are orignally broadcast on CSS via cable and are then redistributed through ESPN Gameplan/Full Court PPV sports subscription but these are limited and SD only. So technically D* does not carry CSS at all, but I guess you could say they carry select events in SD part time?

Another Spanish language HD sports channel you could add is Univision Deportes Network HD; U-Verse is carrying it in HD now.

Holy Crap DIY!

See what I miss not visiting this site at all yesterday? Been busy. THis is a great surprise. My #1 wishlist item is on its way. This is just fantastic! Right at the time of my 2 year anniversary too.

I know there's more HD that we want in our house as well, but DIY is like 80% of my weekend TV viewing, so that really fills a big hole for me!

Bring out that G.D. festivus pole!!!!!!

well CSS may show up on some of the CSN / FS channels or some of the CSN + / FS + overflow feeds.

CSS HD is not full time.

This is also a Houston feed of CSS that may become the new CSN Houston with may a part time over flow feed of CSN Houston showing CSS stuff.

CSS Houston has SportsNite (CSN's signature program).

The network shows live college football and basketball games, primarily from Conference USA, the Sun Belt Conference, and the Southeastern Conference.

and you have http://www.chron.com...USA-3687269.php

"Thus, the switch of these C-USA games from CSS (in the five-state region) to CSN Houston."

I want CLTV / CLTV HD on direct tv.

AntennaTV
MeTV

These channels do not have a national broadcast license, and are only available as sub-stations in certain markets. They have been added to DirecTV in some of the bigger local markets, here in Los Angeles MeTV is carried.

But there are too many markets to carry this channel in every DMA. If this channel were to apply for "superstation" status with the FCC and become a full-fledged national network, it might be different. At the moment however, their main source of income is LOCAL advertising.
[Disclaimer] The definition of "soon" is based solely on DirecTV's interpretation of the word, and all similarities with dictionary definitions of the word "soon" are purely coincidental and should not be interpreted as a time frame that will come to pass within a reasonable amount of time.

How many more satellites are needed to put them are on 4K HD?

Currently, no one broadcasts in 4k HD, and it isn't expected that any U.S. TV station will till at least the 2016-2018 range. There was some experimental feeds with the 2012 Olympics, but none that were publicly available to anyone, only a university in England and Japan received those feeds, and were for testing to see if signals could be broadcast around the world.

DirecTV has stated it will be ready for 4k HD when the time comes. They have satellite launches in 2014, 2015 planned, and another satellite somewhere after that with an unplanned date.

A 4kHD station requires about 4 times the current bandwidth. With adapting newer compression methods, and techniques (a lot of green field or blue sky is easier to deal with), it is estimated that a good quality 4kHD stream is going to be about 25-30 Mbps, so that would put it at 1 4kHD per transponder, perhaps combined with 2 "normal" HD stations.

For now, however, there is no reason to anticipate this. The first 4kHD TV has been released, yes.... but only if you have $12,000 in your pocket. The first 4k BluRay player has also been released, and you WILL need a new player that supports it. We are a LONG way from 4kHD becoming a mainstream standard. As I said, the earliest it is expected any type of commercial broadcasting is 2016-2018 or so, and will probably start with a 4kHD PPV movie channel or something like that.
[Disclaimer] The definition of "soon" is based solely on DirecTV's interpretation of the word, and all similarities with dictionary definitions of the word "soon" are purely coincidental and should not be interpreted as a time frame that will come to pass within a reasonable amount of time.
