I am sure all channels will be in Hi Definition at some point. I also think they have a goal to have all lil in Hi Definition from 99or 103 before they are worried about getting all the national channels in Hi Definition. It would be nice if they could get both by 2016, and then begin the slow process of killing off sd. I think d14 will get them a long way towards that goal, with all the shopping channels and such going Hi Definition in that sat, along with a lot of the lil markets. I expect d15 to get more channels in each market, if not all a hd path, where as i only expect d14 to just get every market some hd. Just my guess....

But all these things are secondary. It still appears the Lakers channel has no effect on DIRECTV launching the remaining top line Hi Definition national channels.

they can put all the shopping stuff in SD MPEG 4.

There are lots of SD only stuff that can be moved MPEG 4 sd.
I want CLTV / CLTV HD on direct tv.

They can't move any of that stuff to mpeg4, sadly. The majority of their sd customers don't have mpeg4 equipment, and since you know the shopping channels pay to be on,there is no way DIRECTV is going to decreased their reach.

They need to get all customers upgraded to hd equipment before they can shut sd off. I still believe they will do it market by market overtime. Kind of like how they slowly did away with mpeg2 Hi Definition. But I don't think that will start till they have the genie as the main number one normal install. Also, there is no reason to start that till they also have some markets able to get all their local channels via a Hi Definition or mpeg4 feed, which there are a few of now. Till then they will let natural movement take place as they always have. I think sometime after d14 is launched that this process may finally begin. I expect it to take five years myself, and move very slowly.

Yep;

Even here in the LA market where we probably have the most Ka/MPEG-4 channels of any other market, 18 (16 HD and 2 SD). There are presently 26 Ku/MPEG-2 SD channels on 101 leaving us still 10 short of an all Ka/MPEG-4 market unless future carriage of those are dropped on any of them.

That's certainly true regarding lots of technical inside information proprietary to DIRECTV and its systems which he would obviously have knowledge or access to.

But all of that notwithstanding, ironically it wouldn't be the first time someone in a company's management made a technically inaccurate statement to the press.

For how can LiL Ka-band spotbeam capacity be used to future broadcast the remaining national HD channels yet to be carried?

The only thing I can see happen is that the future satellites to be launched (D14, D15, and D16) will have enough capacity to move everything that is currently LIL from older satellites onto the newer ones, and somehow "reconvert" the older satellites to show as much national HD as possible.

I wouldn't think spotbeams can be changed from a physical perspective... they are pointed to where they are pointed...... HOWEVER, maybe the bandwidth allocated to spotbeams CAN be moved over to CONUS beams when the bandwidth is no longer allocated to a spot beam transponder.

This isn't going to happen for quite a while. I can only see this happen if a certain percentage of boxes is capable of MPEG 4, e.g. if a 90% threshold is reached, they can move the channels to MPEG 4, and the remaining 10% can then contact DirecTV for a new box if they need to see said channel.

They would also do it one by one, step by step. E.g. they would move 3 channels to MPEG-4 and slowly move customers that want the channels to MPEG-4 boxes, move another 3 channels, and so on, and so on.

One thing to consider is that people won't want to pay for new boxes if the current ones work just fine. Also shopping/religious channels pay for maximum coverage, so there might be some conflicts if they get a message: You are now going to be broadcast using a technology that can only be received by 70% of people instead of 100%.

As easy as we think it might be to just brush aside the shopping and religious channels, they are a pretty good source of income for DirecTV and shouldn't be underestimated in importance.

So tonights Lakers vs. Nuggets game is being shown locally on TWCSN and nationally on ESPN.

I've flipped back and forth between the 2 channels and by far TWCSN has the better picture quality and is just more crisp & clear on TWCSN compared to ESPN HD.

ESPN HD broadcasts all their live sporting events in 720P.TWCSN broadcast almost all of their content in 1080I.

Why Did ESPN Choose 720p versus 1080i?

ESPN chose 720p because of the "p," which stands for progressive scan technology. Progressive scan technology paints the picture on your television screen from top to bottom on a line-by-line basis&.as in lines 1,2,3,4,5,6,7, etc. Interlace technology, the "i" in 1080i, paints the picture on an every-other-line basis, first painting lines 1,3,5,7,9 and then a split second later painting lines 2,4,6,8 and 10. Your eyes then assemble the painting into one image.

Progressive scan technology produces better images for the fast moving orientation of sports television.

I didn't watch the game on twc, mostly because dave miller was on and I personally don't care for his analysis. But i'm watching the post game and they are showing highlights and for me and pq looks not even hd. For from their usual pq, maybe it's just the highlight show though

So much for the team oriented demise of the RSN. Fox is going all in.

Question for the more knowledgable but what is going on with this channel's picture quality, during games of course. Flat out it looks terrible. Is it time warner cable problem? Is this my problem? I've resorted to watching on deportes which doesn't seem to have that problem.

I've wanted to email twc sportsnet but they don't have an email

Not sure why you say wow. I've been expecting that since they didn't sign with FOX before the end of the exclusive window.

Time Warner won the rights to the Dodgers. Their games will not be on TWCSN but on a new channel.

Yay. Just what we need. Another sports channel devoted entirely to one sports organization. Enough with this already. What's the problem with them airing Dodger games on TWC Sports Net with the Lakers???

Are these people nuts????

They had to fight to get the Lakers network on carriers and now they are starting yet another channel?

I am sure the providers thought they would get the Dodgers on TWC SportsNet if and when they signed them up.

How is this in any way shape or form excellent?

Something is going to give.

Dodgers wanted more money, and now we will have to many channels for the sports. It was pushing it with four, not five? Get real. FOX needs to fold San Diego and prime ticket into one channel, and then black out appropriate games on appropriate days and make life simplify for everyone.

SD is just a sub feed of prime.

West is all over.

So maybe just have West and West Plus (part time feed) + sub feeds.

Cable viewers in SD get west and SD.

Other areas get prime and west.
I want CLTV / CLTV HD on direct tv.

Nah I'm not surprise. Dodgers own the rights and fox likely wouldn't go for that.
