Alan,

Does the SHEF query procedure via IP (discussed earlier in this thread) pick up a clear distinction here that this is now an HD channel?

As you know, we clearly identify an MPEG4 vs an MPEG2 channel in the TPN Map. But until we get a little smarter, we can't tell whether a given MPEG4 channel is carrying HD content or SD content.

Or as a helpful reminder the "Video" or "Primary Type" (as titled in the SHEF) of the Hex return string for WALB-DT2 should now read the HD code 0x10 instead of 0x0F for SD.

Sorry... I was swamped yesterday. I'll try and see if I can get that information sometime tonight. :)

I'm running late, so I don't have time to pretty it up, but here's the data I received:

Well, the "10" following the initial 'FFFF" field says this is HD.

Thanks!

The new SD and HD channels for Puerto Rico are already posted in the website(www2.directvpr.com/channel guide). I already call and the CSR told me that they'll call me back during this week for details on the changes.Already know all updates in equipment are free of charge.

The 'probably' response is that Bend will light up next Wednesday.

However, we have had cases where DMAs have lit up all through the week. We only assemble this report once a week - so you need to go through your locals each morning. As I recall, about 6:00 am EST is the usual let's-fire-up-the-locals timeframe.

Be sure to let US know what happens!

Hi guys On Wednesday the 19th I should have the new equipment installed so as soon as all the info like the guide,channels,etc, I'll post how good or bad is. Also some of the channels in conflict in the new maps could and I stress could be the local channels in HD because NONE of them are fulltime HD just for the news(Telemundo) and/or special programming like the Oscars or the Super Bowl.

Even though they don't air true HD programming all the time, most local stations still transmit a 1080i or 720p signal 24/7 and upconvert SD programming.

Well, the "10" following the initial 'FFFF" field says this is HD.

Thanks!

I don't believe that is true. Despite what the documentation says, the "10" only shows that it is MPEG4. Here is the SHEF data for my local channel 15 (CW- Greenville, NC market):
000FFFFF1009FF10501052FFFF000E26130C0D11012904000000000000000000xxxxxxxxxxxx60xxxxxxxxxxxx
But it is only a 480i SD signal, 24 hours a day.

OK good;

Got any info. on the new dish type they're installing there yet?

I ask (now more than once here I realize :sure: ) since you can tell a lot about the new satellite service from the type of dish being used and internet searches are yielding nothing on the issue.

If not and you have to wait for your install on the 19th to see for yourself, I'll understand.

Or at least a derivative of the SL-3. Or perhaps a Slimline 5 or its derivative since how are the SD MPEG-2 channels from 110w assigned to PR listed on the TPN map to be received?

Thank you, tomspeer46:

You are absolutely correct. I think you had proven this on an earlier occasion, and I have simply let it slip my feeble mind.

We have the same dilemma with both our TPN Map data and the data provided by the SHEF query: we can clearly identify those records that are MPEG4, but we have yet to determine a way to identify whether the content being carried is 480i, 720p or 1080i (or 1080p for that matter).

The SHEF definition for that field is more correctly stated as:

0x0B Data
0x0C Audio
0x0E Retired
0x0F MPEG2
0x10 MPEG4
0xFF None

And if the local station suddenly were to make an HD signal available, DirecTV could put that on the same transponder, with no observable data change, as far as I can see. It seems that customer observation and feedback, such as what Alan Gordon gave you, is your only resource.

The Avatar is my curious neighborhood Otter.

True;

I just queried my two SD MPEG-4 locals here in the LA market, KVCR 24-2 and KLCS-58-2, and they both have the "10" HD type code.

However in Alan's case I was basing this as additional evidence of his ABC affiliate going HD in that I'm sure his receiver(s) resolution indicators are showing it as a native HD signal.
