With the whole home set-up, I think it should be possible to move programs from one proprietary DVR to another without the risk of duplicating digital recordings for transfer outside the DVR network.

This sure would help to add and remove equipment. Maybe add it to a wishlist?

And allow an external drive be transferred to another DVR without losing the ability of watching the programs from the external.
DirecTV since '96, Waivers for ABC, CBS, NBC, & Fox, HR23-700 & HR24-500/AM21, using ethernet based MRV.
