Most Efficient Way to Upgrade from Legacy HR24 to HR34

It's been awhile since I've been on here, but I'm looking at a dead receiver and am hoping there's a more reasonable solution than what I've been offered so far, and this has historically proven to be the best resource for that. Here's the situation.

I started with DirecTV in the mid-00s on an HR20-700 fed by a Slimline dish (the setup with 2 cables and 2 BBCs; I don't know more than that). After many years of faithful service, it gave up the ghost about a year ago. At that time, DirecTV kindly replaced the dead HR20 with a new HR24 (also fed by the same Slimline dish, 2 cables, 2 BBCs, etc.), with no new contract.

That HR24 is now also dead (stuck on "Running Receiver Self-Test..." and none of the troubleshooting I've found on here has worked).

So, I called DirecTV, and after humoring their "technical support", tried to arrange for an HR34 as a replacement/upgrade. After dickering over the price for a bit, we settled on $299 for the upgrade. I was then told that it also required a new 2-year "commitment". I told her I was unwilling to do that, and she said that was the best she could do. I asked for retention (which has apparently been renamed "cancellation"), and was transferred.

The guy in cancellation/retention told me the same thing. No HR34 without $299 AND a 2-year commitment. I asked him why I wouldn't just buy one on the internet for $400 and call it a day, and he told me because my equipment all needed to be upgraded.

So, with that as the background, I *think* I have 2 questions:

1. Is it true that you cannot get an HR34 from DirecTV unless you also agree to a new 2-year contract? If that's not true, then how does one go about getting one without a new 2-year contract?

2. Is it true that my equipment needs to be upgraded? If that is true, then is that something I can either do myself or have an install guy do without signing up for a new 2-year deal? Note: My "ability" level in this department is fairly limited; I'm good if I just need to throw a splitter or something back behind the cabinet where the 2 BBCs now are, but if I need to change the dish or something, that's not in the "I can do" department.

I guess the real question is, given the above, can I go from where I am to an HR34 setup WITHOUT a new 2-year contract, and if so, how?

1. Even if you bought it elsewhere it would come with a 2 year commitment.

2. Yes, you need to be upgraded to a SWM system because the HR34 is a SWM only unit. By the time you bought all the stuff to upgrade to SWM you'd be better off just letting them do it for you. It's more than just a splitter that needs to be changed.

Bonus: An HR24 is not a "Legacy" unit.

So, long and short of it is, no HR34 without a new 2-year commitment, eh?

Call back again later, or tomorrow, and you may get a better deal. It's taken some of us more than a couple of calls to get the deal on an HR34 that we wanted.

I'm actually okay with $299. It's the 2-year commitment that's causing the hangup for me, but if there's no way around that, then we'll just decide if we're willing to do that or not. Thanks!

You have been with them for a number of years. Are you thinking of leaving? Are you unhappy with the service? That would be the only hang-up I would see.

2 years is just a long time, and the way we consume content these days is changing pretty dramatically. Fully 1/2 of what we watch at this point is available on Netflix/Hulu/Internet/etc. Once some of those holes get filled in (live sports, etc.), we'll probably drop cablesat altogether. So, I'm not really looking to get married for 2 years. That's all.

Probably just get a replacement HR24 and call it good.

No guarantee of model if getting a replacement from DTV. Might be an HR21, HR22, or HR 23. The only way to get a specific model is to order thru an online seller such as Solid Signal, then you get a new 2 year commitment. Go for the 34.

There are actually legacy boxes. I can guarantee I won't get an H20, R15 or D10 if I ordered one of those classes of boxes. And new customers are not guaranteed the newest boxes unless they order an HMC.

Well I just did my dance with them today. My main receiver Locked up. Red button reboot failed so removed power. When it booted everything was there except my recordings.

She said glad to get things Back and I complained IT'S BROKE. she sad no it isn't throwing an error. I told her I was on protection plan and this should be tracked and replaced with that. She said that was only for items they couldn't restart. So I said with all this what can u do to replace with hr34 under plan. She said 499. I wasn't happy but love them. Had to Ivestigate others but didn't find any positive deals. Called cancellation to what we could do as I am looking at Comcast and uverse. Explained and he said yea that was terrible services will review order. He will get a reqplacement box ASAP sent. So i raised question again that it would be easier to just move to 34 since everything is already gone What would that be. Was put on hold a few min came back with
Free hr34 (799 through Dtv. 399 to 499 elsewhere and ANY purchased will extend contract according to rep)
My contract extended 2yrs
Free whole home equipnet if needed (I set mine up over Ethernet )
Anything else the vendor needs to add

In the end,Dtv steps ups again. No issues locking in with them for a few mores years!
