But are you wanting the 2012 G4 or the 2013 rebranding?

2012. Well actually...2011 with Candace Bailey and Kevin Pereira as hosts of Attack Of The Show.

Have to's

  • Comcast Sportsnet Philadelphia, plus overflows.
  • Time Warner Cable Sportsnet/Deportes - Los Angeles
  • Comcast Sportsnet Houston
  • FS New Orleans subfeed.

*NBA season starts 10/30, I'd anticipate launches closer to then.

  • H2
  • Investigation Discovery
  • Fox Movie Channel (when available in HD)
  • Telemundo DNS

Like to's

  • ESPN Deportes
  • Fox Deportes
  • Galavisión

Nope. NBC had planned to upgrade Chiller and Sleuth (now Cloo) to HD back several years ago, but cancelled plans when the economy took a nose-dive.

I presume because of the Christmas movies? All Christmas movies made by Lifetime (and/or broadcasted by Lifetime) will also show on the regular Lifetime network in the Christmas period, so you don't have to worry about missing them in HD.

You mean the man-hater channel, don't you? :)

Very true VH1 Classic is broadcast in HD. I wouldnt mind adding it if it did though. And I so wish they would come out with a channel like the old TechTV was I miss that.

Yeah, this would be a great channel to add, in HD! Nothing like some Diamond Dave and the rest of Van Halen, with their great video's. I can dig it!!!

Other than the sports channels my #1 pick would be TV Land in HD. Wife would like the Style Channel.

Yes, TVLand sans the extra commercial over-runs in HD!

Never going to happen, and all the good TechTV people are better off now anyway, at least most of them.

The cycle races have some great scenery, and would be lot easier to see the cyclists in HD. Sure would be watched, as much as the Tour de France, on NBC Sports Network.

Yeah, and after the Tour of Utah being on Fox Sports, I'd like a full time RSN.

H2, H2 and H2! And CSN Philly!

If DirecTV in fact embraces 4k in 2016 and NHK meets its reported goal to begin 8k trial broadcasts during 2020, the TV replacement cycle for enthusiasts is going to contract substantially.

Alan,

Great job on the list. I have two corrections and one comment for you on the following section:

SPANISH LANGUAGE CHANNELS THAT DIRECTV CURRENTLY OFFERS IN SD, BUT NOT HD (11):

A Toda Musica
Azteca America
Azteca Mexico
BeIN Sport Dos
ESPN Deportes
Fox Deportes
GolTV
Telemundo
TeleNoticias 24
Television Espanola
Univision Deportes Network

---Directv does not offer Univision Deportes Network. I believe its only offered by Dish, Fios and ATT.

---Galavision should be on this list. Its only offered in SD.

---Telemundo (National East and West) are not offered in HD by Directv but local Telemundo affiliates are offered in HD in some markets.

thanks

Well this is certainly interesting information...care of TVPredictions.com:

A top DIRECTV executive says the satcaster plans to offer all channels in High-Definition by 2016.

That's according to an article by advanced-television.com.

The web site says Philip J. Goswitz, DIRECTV's senior vice president for space and communications, told last month's Euroconsult conference that all standard-def channels would be converted to HDTV by 2016 using local-into-local Ka-Band capacity.

He added that with standard-def transmissions converted to high-def, it would free up 1 gigahertz of satellite spectrum for upcoming Ultra HD signals, now better known as 4K. Consequently, Goswitz predicted that DIRECTV would begin offering Ultra HD in four years.

Which would mean they'd have to swap out all the SD boxes for HD, like they do for MPEG4 markets now, right?

I can think of one or two users here that won't like that :)

I assume there are a lot of contract negotiations to do by then as we'll. According to Alan's list, it looks like right now there are over 50 channels to "upgrade" to HD. With I'm sure more to come by 2016. Of course they could simply drop some of those channels to accomplish the same thing. That's probably not as likely.

So does this mean they may start locking up the rights to show the HD version of all channels as they renegotiate contracts going forward? I would think they would need to in order to be in a position in 2016 to get where they want to be.

I'm very pleased with the potential possibilities.
