Thanks for all the advice. I ordered the HR34 today.

FYI: The DIRECTV channel line-up should definitely work well for our family. While the Sunday Ticket wasn't a deciding factor, it will be nice to have.

I never had a customer come into my shop and ask me, "What's old?"

I bet you've had somebody ask what's on clearance. ;)

So it's "the newest model", and is a significantly different DVR, so it still has some things to sort out.

The HR20 still has some things that need to be sorted out if the Wish List is to be believed.

 Who's wish list?

The one that was started by Doug Brott and later handed off to Steve in 2007.

Oddly, if you do a forum search for the word "wish", you get no matches but Google is our friend:

The referenced incarnation of the Wish List was apparently discontinued earlier this year.

Which is the point.
You can always find something a customer wants, that isn't going to be done.
I doubt this is unique with DirecTV.

The Wish List had several wants, but it included a number of needs as well.

As to the TS' original question about the "solidness" of the HR34.

Well in my view let's just say that its many benefits more than outweigh its problems.

But I have to admit the HR34 still takes its share of detours into the Twilight Zone.

Just in the past three days, most requiring a restart to fix, I've experienced spontaneous screen saver starts that wipe the live buffer upon recovery. Random network disconnects, "Need to change channel for recording" pop-ups for scheduled SLs with all four other tuners available, random channel changes when an SL recording starts. Occasional HDMI loss of sync causing the picture and sound to black out.

And now I come in to watch television on the unit and notice all my OTA channels from the AM21N are out and show error 792 SFS. Sign ...

Great unit with a lot of upside, but I can't overlook its share of weird problems though.

You have Genie turned off? (Guessing you do now) I am about to, probably after I see what changes go on tonight or tomorrow.

I suspect Genie caused my remote recording submission of the Niners-Vikings game to get by-passed, quite annoying. It should never take precedence over a request.

Actually I still have Genie on trying to give it lots of chances to make better suggestions, but so far in over two weeks nothing its really suggested is even close to my watching habits.

Can you use the DirecTV Home Media Center HD DVR without a RVU-enabled TV? I only have 1 TV, so I have no need for the RVU features. I called earlier today to purchase the HMC HD DVR and the person would not let me purchase one because I didn't have a RVU-enabled TV. I figured I'd just call back to get a different rep.

You do not need a RVU TV.

mpauser, I'm not sure you get a HR34 if you don't have Whole Home DVR (WHDVR). Does anybody know if this is the case?

With only one TV, you can't have WHDVR. This may be the confusion with the CSR. RVU might be on the second TV.

You can get it as stand alone but need a swm setup
My comments and opinions are my own and not necessarily those of DirecTV.

After a couple months, I find that the HR34 is better than my HR20 overall.

I've had more stability problems - it will lock up a couple times a week and needs to be reset since the latest update, but so far I have only lost 1 recording to the issue.

Some guide display issues were there before the last update, but those seem to have been fixed (or I haven't seen them lately), and now the lockups have appeared.

As others have said, the brand new devices all appear to have some issues.
