I think we need to take his comments with a grain of salt...remember DirecTV owns Root Sports. He doesn't like the fact teams are starting their own networks...with the help of the likes of Comcast/TWC. DirecTV sees teams they had deals with hin the past leaving to better offers from another provider. Most of the "new" channels started up were with the help of another provider CSN Houston (Rockets Astros) and TWC (Lakers). I highly doubt he'd be saying the system was broken if Root went into a market and started up a channel with the help of a major sports franchise. I don't think they Dodgers have signed a new deal yet, I am sure Root would love to be a player with the Dodgers if/when they start up their own network.

I thought the Root channels were a rebranding of channels they got when they did the deal with Liberty to get majority ownership, along with GSN channel?

See post My Setup for configuration info.

Surprising results, but actually after more thought, I guess it wasn't unexpected.

Any fallout, if any at all, probably won't be felt until the fourth quarter or first quarter of next year for a number of reasons.

1. People were still hoping DirecTV would pick up the PAC-12 network through the end of September as the rhetoric wasn't completely sour back then as it is now and many still had hope.

2. I'm not sure when Dish picked up the pac-12 network, but it may have been at about the quarterly transition, so the bulk of the jumpers, if any, won't show up until the fourth quarter.

3. The lakers deal is still in flux and people are waiting. IF DirecTV doesn't carry this channel, the affects, if any, probably won't be felt until next year.
