Everything on the remote (RC64) works fine except for the number keys (1-9,0). All working buttons are quick and responsive. I currently need to scroll forever through the guide to switch channels. Which is to say the least #@&#$%* annoying.

I opened the remote and took it apart and cleaned the board and rubber button cover with rubbing alcohol. This improved the working keys even more but still failed to fix the number keys. Is this a bad remote, or a bad software problem?

Thanks!

Sounds like you need a replacement.
If you pay the insurance fee each month they will send you another one.

The newest model is the RC65X or RC65RX. They can be had on Ebay for about $7.
You can also buy them at Walmart and Best Buy for about $19.

True, I forgot about that one. My son has one of those and it drains the batteries 3 times as fast as the ones without the backlight.

I do have the protection plan. However, will they just send me another RC64 or a newer better remote, i.e. the RC65X, RC65RX, or RBX as suggested.

Newer model. Probably an RC65X.

The X models are interactive with the 24 and higher number of receivers. They are capable of having a new code put in them from one of those receivers. Very nice.

I'm running an HR20/700. So will the newer remotes work with my receiver?

Yes, the new ones will operate all
except the THR22 Tivo and of course none of the old Tivo receivers.

I have an HR24 and an RC65RBX - can you expand on what you mean by this?

Some DVRs are Not particularly Responsive due to Software like the HR20/700 and your DVR is 6 years old. The HR24s are the Most Responsive of the DVRs (I don't know about the HR34s but they probably are also like the HR24s).

Sometimes it can be caused by IR Interference but there are tons of posts and thread here at DBSTALK complaining about Slow Input or Missed Input from Number Keys while entering in a Channel Number.

Edmund aka tivoburkee, the expert on remotes,
posted that he tried to program an item that was not in the remote set of codes for that remote.
He then used it with an HR24 and it programmed the item using a code that is not built into the remote.
As new codes come out they will be in the receivers.

Here is a video showing how to program it instead of the old way of putting in the codes.

Note that he is using the old software before the HD GUI and the steps are just a tiny bit different but easily followed.
