Question for everyone, I have a dead HR21-700. I know I can call Directv to get the receiver replaced but I don't have hardly anytime to call this time of the year (my job keeps me extremely busy). When I do have time can I swap in a new hard drive? I just don't want to call to be honest. Thanks for any help!

Swapping the hard drive is easy put in a 1 or 2 tera byte Seagate green drive they sell them at Best buy cheap. The only tool that u probably dont have is the special torx. Its called a security torx they sell them at pepboys or advanced auto. Pepboys was cheaper i think i paid 10 bucks for a set of security tips.

Keep in mind that opening your unit is a no-no unless it is owned. If it is the hard and you don't own it your best bet is going eSATA.

Do you know for sure it is the hard drive?

RunnerFL I get an on screen error that the drive is bad. I could use Esata I guess. Any suggestions on an Esata solution?

Most people find the BlacX eSATA dock and a WD AV drive to be a good inexpensive combination.
