I have always had grey dishes. I had my dish replaced and I now have a black dish. The previous one was the oval HD grey one with three LNBF's. I now have the exact one but the dish is black.

Why is my dish black?

Why the mad emoticon? I actually liked the black dish I got when I was switched to eastern arc.

They're not painted. They're made of special space age carbon composite fibers left over for the last satellite Dish had made.

They're designed to survive the end of the world in a couple of weeks.

Obviously...
They made it to piss of the techs who install them by giving them a heat absorbing metal surface to carry up to the roof of a house.

I once had to carry up the old white/grey dish up to my roof on a hot day and forgot my gloves. That was not a good idea ._.
I can only imagine these must be retaining more heat?

It was my understanding that the WA black dishes were the 1000.4's with a WA LNB that they were installing for a while. OF WHICH are better at grabbing three sats at once. Slightly larger surface area and better focal ability. I have read in many forums that they stopped installing those, or until they deplete the stock, because they cost a "tad" more. I was hoping to get one, but I like my two dish install, that a Field Super and three techs replaced my 1000.2 with, better. They realized that it beats the heck out of a 1000.2. The 1000.2 as per past engineers that used to work at DISH, and the ones I use to work with at another company, that would come and fix my system with a blink of an eye compared to an afternoon with a tech, said that they were the 1000.4 and did a far better job of grabbing the 3 sats, but DISH found them to be too expensive compared to us the signal we could with a 1000.2. Needless to say, those Senior Field Supers are no longer with DISH due to their opinions and convictions. I miss you guys so much.

P.S.
I use to work for Hughes Aerospace. Yup. I'm still laughing from when I heard that DISH bought them. He should have bought TiVo. Then timers would work.

My 1000.4WA is gray. I started noticing the black 1000.4's right after I got mine. I was wondering if there is any difference other than cosmetic.

You do not want to paint the dish. The surface is designed to reflect the satellite signal. Paint would change the properties of the dish surface and possibly weaken the signals.

Paint is fine - as long as you DON'T paint the LNB itself, especially the white part.

I'm saying this as someone who HAS spraypainted a Dish500 to cover rustspots.
You CAN put antennas on your owned and/or controlled property...

I have seen many dishes painted to match the house. I have painted several myself with Teflon paint and the snow slides right off. You just need to make sure that the surface is clean first, and no prep if it's been out in the elements for a while. That's enough prep to make the paint stick. Oh and darker colors help the snow melt, but can also cause the dish to warp. I was surprised at the black dishes. But then thought maybe they were making them with a better grade of metal. Thus, the increased expense and them going away.
