I just got DISH for a summer cabin near Green Bank, WV. I have my own equipment, (311 xcvr w/DishPro). I have a month-to-month contract that I stopped in Oct and will renew in May.

Because its just a cabin setup and only used on rainy days and for news, I don't need anything HD, or 1000 channels. HOWEVER, I just discovered the program guide on this website and noticed that my locals, (out of Roanoke, VA), are broadcasting subchannels and from what I have read, I can get them; How?

Do I enter the five digit channel numbers, or what. This is all new to me and right now I'm in Richmond, VA and have no access to the cabin receiver.

As I have no internet there, I would like to be prepared when I go up to the cabin in May. Any help would be appreciated.

OMT. Would adding the sat at 61.5 add anything to my channel getting ability. I have an extra dish I could hook up to the in port on the LNB.

Thanks,

Larry

Are you allowed that in Green Bank? :) ;)

You can't get subchannels via Dish.

"Belligerent and numerous."

Sometimes I update the Dish Network FAQ

AT200, Hopper & 360 via HDMI to Onkyo 505 to basement 42" Westy, Hopper via Comp-over-Cat5 to living room 42" Vizio with a Roku 3, Joey to Toshiba 32" LCD with a Logitech Revue. You want fries with that? Pull up to the 2nd window.

That sounds more like they are referring to OTA, the 311 does not have an OTA tuner so I doubt you would see them through it. If you have OTA there, you may be able to see them directly through the tv if it has a digital tuner.

You need a DISH VIP receiver to have an ATSC tuner. You also need an Over the air TV antenna to receive the signals from your local broadcasters.

The 311 receiver has a pass-through for the OTA channels. The TV Antenna/Cable In port on the back of the receiver is used to connect your coax cable from your OTA antenna. Once the antenna is connected to this port, you should scan for channels on your TV. After the channels are scanned into your TV, you input the channel number on your TV to access the channel. If you have further questions, please let me know. Thanks.

61.5 might add some PI(public interest) channels but that probably is all you will gain.

No you cannot tune OTA channels on a 311 receiver.

Thanks, Can I get the sub channels with any other DISH xcvr? IF not, what are these DISH channel numbers?

Does this site have a Newbie forum? I'm starting to get into satellite TV.

No, the 311 is a sd receiver and does not have any other tuner besides the one used to get the sat channels. The Dish channels listed is where the guide info would be coming from, the heading for that list even states this. These are OTA and the receiver (or the tv for that matter) would need a digital tuner ie: Vip or Hopper/Joey and an OTA adaptor would be needed as well and an install of an OTA antenna. The OTA antenna is not a sat antenna (remember the antennas used in the 60's and 70's) but could be installed by a local retailer and probably not your local Dish installer.

Most of those channels cannot be directly tuned. The four digit channels can be tuned on a HD receiver ... and the four digit SD channels can be tuned on SD receivers (see the top part of the list where -00 channels are shown). The five digit channels cannot be tuned on any receiver ... those five digit channels do not actually exist - they only exist as guide entries for DISH to map to an over the air received signal.

Thanks James. You gave the best answer.

I would close this thread if I knew how.
