How do I interpret the hex data I get from the DVR? Here is an example of what I got back.

How do I interpret the hex data I get from the DVR? Here is an example of what I got back.

"00F4FFFF1009FF10501052FFFF000F0914041B120D22060000000000000000000000AEDFF80E5500086605EC48"

Yeah ...

You can practice to do this yourself by doing a forum search on the "how to" for this process in the future. But anyhow, as a courtesy this time; :)

"00F4"= Major Channel Number (Channel 244 in this case).

"FFFF"= Minor Channel Number (N/A in this case).

"10"= Compression format used (Means MPEG-4 in this instance and is known by other means to be an HD channel).

"09"= Audio Compression format (Means AC3 or Dolby Digital here).

"FF"= Indicates if its a data transmission or not (It isn't in this case as this is a TV transmission).

"1050"= Video Packet ID number (VPID).

"1052"= Audio Packet ID number (APID).

"FFFF"= Data Packet ID number (DPID) (Means N/A in this case).

"000F"= Network ID number (15 in this instance which refers to CONUS beam transponders from 103w).

"09"= TID number which may take different names, "Transponder Identifier," "Transponder Identity Descriptor," "Table Index," or the less representative sounding "Transponder Frequency Index," etc., whatever the case it all refers to the same thing, as a pointer or index into a transponder frequency table which when combined with the Network ID uniquely identifies the actual transponder used for conveying the signal along with the host satellite (if the TID range does not overlap with another of the same NID that is)

For instance in this particular example the TID Hex code "09" with an NID of 15 cited earlier means CONUS transponder number 10 from D12 satellite at 103w.

"14"= Years since 1993 which this string was read (20 in this case, so 1993+20= 2013).

"04"= Month of reading (4th or April here).

"1B"= Day of reading (the 27th here).

"12"= Hour at reading (18th or 6:00 PM local time).

"0D"= Minutes at reading (13 past the local hour in this case).

"22"= Seconds at reading (34 past the local minute here).

"06"= Weekday of reading (the 6th or Saturday. Monday is the 1st).

"00 00 00 00"= ROM Version numbers 3,2,1, and 0 (Blanked out by system due to privacy).

"00 00 00 00"= STS ID numbers 0,1,2, and 3 (Blanked out by system for privacy).

"00"= STS version (Blanked out by system for privacy).

"0000AEDFF80E" Receiver ID (RID in HEX, you should conceal this).

"55"= Signal strength level (96 in this instance).

"00086605EC48" (Access card number in HEX. You should conceal this as well).

I just moved back to the Albany, NY DMA.  When I had my locals switched this morning, I was surprised to find WCWN, ch. 45  in my guide, since I cannot receive the SD locals on 119 (tree blockage, 119 is at 23 deg. elevation).  It is in the the May 1 transponder map, and I assume that it is new as of that date, since no comments were made between 4/10 and now. It wasn't there on 4/10.  That means all Albany DMA channels are available on Mpeg4 satellites, which eliminates reception problems for a lot of people here in the Adirondacks.

To facilitate your homework, attached are the TPN Maps for 4/10, 4/17, 4/24 and 5/1.

Is this perhaps an MPEG4 channel?  Please remember that the data for an MPEG4 record does not tell us the content resolution of the payload...

It will be interesting to see what you discover!

EDIT: 5/15 - removed the four old TPN Maps that were used for research

According to a poster titled "Weather88," though he doesn't list his location http://www.dbstalk.c...e-v3/?p=3134114 nevertheless reports on the city-by-city availability thread, that its an HD Channel.

And since WCWN still has an MPEG-2 SD version on 119, has there ever been a case where DIRECTV would put up an MPEG-4 SD version of the same channel?

I took a look at the transponder maps, and the mpeg4 signal for WCWN, first appears in the May 1 data. It is on VPID 1060 on the same transponder as the other Albany mpeg4 spot beam locals (except for the Vermont virtuals, which only a very few areas get). With NATIVE ON, my tv reports a 1080i signal, as do the lights on my HR24. The programming ithat is on is in 16:9 HD, so this is not just an SD mpeg4 signal.

I have heard several instances when DirecTV could not complete an install in this area, because there was no clear line of sight to 119 for SD only customers, or the SD only channels for people with HD receivers. 23 degrees elevation in a mountainous, forested region is a problem. In my case, I told the installer that I didn't care about SD only channels, and he fudged the install with a SL3S LNB, then reconnected the SL5S afterward. Now I have no missing channels (and I retired the SL5).

I count nine DMA's with SD locals on 119, where the elevation is below 30 degrees. DirecTV already has created MPEG4 only markets when they gave up the satellite at 77 deg W, The nine low angle SD markets would seem to be the next logical choice, but it may be just a slow migration. FWIW, the nine DMA'a are: Albany NY. Buffalo NY, Rochester NY, Hartford CT, Lansing MI, Flint MI, Portland ME, Providence RI, and Springfield MA.

I was going to try moving the dish to a different location to try to get 119, but I will wait and watch the signal strength for 99 and 103 as the leaves come out fully.

I can confirm that WCWN is indeed an HD feed, not just MPEG-4 SD. The guide lists the shows in HD, and my TV shows it as an HD resolution.

Thanks, I knew I probably had that wrong, I just couldn't remember. I had an extra dish for it in Syracuse.

You might as well throw Wilkes-Barre, PA in there too. With the terrain and the wooded areas around here, getting LOS for 119 is very hard unless you have a clear view of the horizon or your roof is above the trees.

Well ....not a channel I watch, but for the Spanish speaking good to see. Though right now KRCA 62-1 HD (720p) is only up-converted SD with stretch-o-vision. Yuck ...

Anyhow that makes for 17 HD local channels now carried by DIRECTV in the LA DMA. The Big 4 on CONUS beam and 13 others on spots.

An interesting observation, based upon the 5/29/13 TPN data:

We now have:

1,821 MPEG4 LIL channels

1,317 MPEG2 LIL channels

That is quite an evolution in a few very short years.  And we can expect that MPEG2 to MPEG4 transition to continue at an ever accelerating rate.

I also noted that when I examined all 10 of the LIL markets on 119, where the satellite is below 30 degrees above the horizon, including Wilkes-Barre, (thank you KyL416), all of the local stations on 119 in those markets are on mpeg4 satellites at a higher elevation.  It works for me!
