This is a recap of all LIL channels currently in TEST status.

EDIT: Status as of 4/3/13

EDIT:  4/27/13:  The recap listing is very stale.  Please see the most current TPN Map Excel for current and accurate data.

Many minor verbiage changes in virtually every NET and DMA. Over 585 of these 'adjustments', but no new channels. (See new HD LILs transitioned from TEST, in the following post.) No changes of significance.

Thats funny.....I guess 480i widescreen is now HD?
I can pick it up OTA and its a subchannel off CBS. I know on both satco's its in SD so black barred on top and bottom....since everything but national programming is black barred hell its basically postage stamp on both providers

At least Directv will be providing a "better" signal ;)

(I know Directv gets a feed directly from KEYC studios as the OTA signal signs off at 1:07 each night but on D* and cable they play infomercials. Even Charter cable pipes in KMSP FOX 9 from Minneapolis for the HD programming)

Nah;

The problem is when an SD channel is using MPEG-4 compression and on Ka band, the data available in the un-encrypted data stream the maps are based upon do not contain the actual resolution of the signal being carried thereby distinguishing it from an HD program which uses the same format but at HD resolutions of course.

See gct's post here and the following immediate comments for a full explaination of the problem.

right now its in SD on 101W...When Directv added it they pulled KMSP (Minneapolis) from the Mankato lineup. Mankato is a 1 station town for decades (CBS). They added Fox subchannel in July 07 but Directv didnt carry it until last year. Mankato subs get ABC NBC and at the time FOX from Minneapolis

So if they are uplinking it in MPEG4 obviously they will "call" it a HD channel. Like I say the SD channel is mainly postage stamp unless its Fox programming. With it being in "HD" at least the screen will be filled on network programming ;)

First - the previous HoTat2 post is absolutely correct; we clearly know which channels use MPEG4 compression, but at this time at least, we cannot tell the resolution of the programming payload being carried.

But - the 'A3' channel prefix almost universally indicates an HD channel. Right now I can not think of an exception.

[Edit: 2/28 - With a quick review of the data, there are now many "A3" prefix channels that are in SD. I need to find a clear, and current, definition of the "A3" notation. At one time it did indicate an MPEG4-D HD channel. (The MPEG4-D being Directv's custom implementation of MPEG4.) But today, I am finding many 'A3' records which are clearly not MPEG4 and clearly not HD.]

And it is not logical to waste bandwidth on D11 to send you a second copy of the same low quality SD signal you already receive from D4S/D9S. I would suggest that the lousy quality MPEG2 video you know have would be an equally lousy quality MPEG4 video. There might be a technical improvement in the MPEG4 picture, but not one that we humans would likely detect.

Forgive me for being optimistic, but this *TEST channel may be sitting here waiting for your FOX/13 to go HD. If you are interested, it might be worth your time to talk with those local station engineers....

The new Puerto Rico channels, as an example, have a number of SD channels which are provided in MPEG4. You will be happy to know that those channels are not mis-represented as being HD.

The Directv Latin America (DLA) TPN Map has been updated to 2/28/13 data.

I am also told, "...the CEO of DLA has announced in Latin America that Intelsat30 (which will be fully dedicated to Directv) will launch late this year or very early in 2014. That is significant because the World Cup is in July, 2014."

The difference will be the SD channel right now is in postage stamp mode (with black bars around the picture) and national programming will have black bars on top and bottom. The "HD" channel (480i widescreen) will at least fill the picture during national programming. They dont have HD capabilities for outside national programming (they dont on the CBS main either). I can get the OTA version and it isnt that bad....unless there is really fast motion like NASCAR or NFL ;)
The SD channel on D* looks...to quote Charles Barkley...."TURRIBULL....JUST TURRIBULL"
So the "HD" version should be an improvement

Forgive me for being optimistic, but this *TEST channel may be sitting here waiting for your FOX/13 to go HD. If you are interested, it might be worth your time to talk with those local station engineers....

there is no HD version of the channel. I spoke with both the engineer and the GM about 2 years ago about HD (instead of 480i) and they said they can't go HD as the main CBS channel is in HD (I know it can be done but they are cheap....the owners own this stationa dn the CBS & FOx in Watertown, NY). The station(FOX subchannel) has been around since 07 but D* just added it a year ago IIRC which pissed a lot of people off as they were getting KMSP from Minneapolis in HD. SInce KEYC is the Fox affiliate they had to drop KMSP as the imported station. So now they got fox in glorious SD. I remember KEYC (the CBS station) saying to call Directv and demand they put the HD feed up but again there is no HD feed available for KEYC-DT2. Cable carries both KEYC-DT2 and KMSP in SD but only KMSP in HD (they do the same for CBS too...KEYC and WCCO in SD but KEYC in HD)
Directv gets a "direct feed" from the studios as both stations sign off at 12:30 at night yet on Directv you see sign off (anthem and everything), then color bars, (then the OTA transmitter gets turned off) and on D* they show paid programs on both stations.

I guess a full "HD" picture is better than postage stamp or black bars on the top and bottom of the screen ;)

On 2/27, a half-dozen posts back in this thread, I made some comments about the "A3" prefix of LIL channel names. That post pointed out the need to do some homework and here is what I have found thus far. I do stand ready to be corrected by those with better resources...

A3 stands for "Advanced Modulation, Advanced Coding and Advanced Compression". A3 is assigned by satellite and transponder; the channels in our TPN Map with the A3 designation simply reflect the A3 status of their transponder.

We first noticed and started posting at dbstalk about the A3 channel prefix in 2009. From that time until recently, the A3 notation has been synonymous with HD. That assumption held up fine until recently. That makes sense: the greatest return-on-investment for Advanced Compression equipment is to be made with HD.

Now both Ku and Ka sats have A3 transponders. And we now have a number of SD channels with the A3 designation. These channels are clearly not HD and they do not appear to be MPEG4. It would be a natural progression to begin applying the gains of Advanced Compression to SD channels. A base of legacy MPEG2-only receivers may require that some channels not be upgraded to MPEG4.

It is not clear why the LIL channels from an A3 transponder carry the A3 prefix in their name, while CONUS channels from an A3 transponder do not carry that prefix.

It's just comments, no more. Don't be fooled by words. :)
A3 is a designator of tpn, not a channel. The note "A3" will be or could be assigned to a channel's note what is carry by such tpn.
