Well, the installation has come and gone! So now I'm back with Dish with one old and one new Hopper. I am very impressed!

The install went with just one glitch. And that was with the wireless. Damned thing insisted that the wireless was WPA when it is WEP and wouldn't configure. So I connected an ethernet wire temporarily to it so we could get the rest of the install finished. After he left, I went in and tried the wireless again, this time it still said WPA, but it went onto the security part and now says it is WEP. Had to come back here and find out how to turn on bridging as that isn't in any documents I read. All is good.

First impressions.

1. The HD is superb! I still have my D* equipment hooked up and the differences are a tad noticeable, but now it is in Dish's favor! That's a change.

2. The SD on EA is wonderful. None of that D* bit starved SD. I definitely won't miss that. The SD is good enough that even those channels I would like in HD are good enough and about at DVD quality which ain't bad.

3. The speed is amazing! Compared to the best that D* has to offer, it is just a night and day difference.

4. Search is much better than it used to be imo. And having a dedicated search button is something I missed on the D* equipment although the search functionality on the D* equipment was superb.

5. I think that the menuing and such is a bit over the top in cuteness. I would prefer listings instead of all the cute logos, much easier to deal with imo. Because of the way things work, other than for the more basic things, a universal remote such as the Harmony 1 isn't as easy to use with the Hopper vice the HR series in my opinion.

6. VOD on the Hopper is just not real easy to use. No picking of channels similar to the way D* does it, which I think made more sense. I'll have to use it more to see if I change my mind about that.

Overall I'm very pleased and as soon as I've watched the recordings I have on the D* equip I'll cancel them out. Got to check out the VOD on Dish to see what of my D* recordings are available that way to help speed that process up.

The install had to download on the new Hopper as they had brought 2 old ones that they had preloaded because of a miscommunication. But it went very quick I thought. About 30-40 minutes from start of Hopper setup to ready to authorize.

So you finally get a 3D TV and go back to Dish?

Just joking, enjoy your new setup.

I can understand why you would say that, does seem strange!

But I'm not real big on 3D, and definitely not sports, cartons and nature shows. I can rent 3D movies at the video store just down the street for much less than PPV, so it isn't a big deal.

Menu menu shows Model ID as Hopper with Sling

Can't run system info as I've got PTAT going.

I thought you'd like the 3D boxing matches on ESPN 3D.

As I said a while ago. And I've never seen it say Hopper2, the official name is Hopper with Sling. See attached.

The default setting for an activity to 'watch Hopper' does give quite a few buttons by default, but it is missing many others that would be handy unless I select the Hopper device itself.

I'll be adding those into the screens on the activity today.

Yeah. DVR, LiveTV etc are the ones I added. Plus a few custom key changes. I had not used the 700 for a couple of years or so because the color button codes didn't work on the 922. However, I haven't changed the 700's set up and all the color buttons work correctly.

After a few days with my 2 Hopper installation, I have to say the Dish really got their stuff together in designing these! Speed is super, PQ is amazingly better even better that D*'s by a slight amount in HD, and hugely better with SD.

Menuing seems fine once I got use to it, and the flow of use is pretty much on target. My son and I were talking about this switchover and we both agreed that the Hopper is one sweet box.

But what's up with all the icons? Hasn't anyone ever heard of a LIST?? :) I've got nothing against icons, but where a list makes more sense, it should be a list. Must've been a fire sale on icons the day they designed the front end! :)

I switched primarily because what D* wanted to add in HD didn't match what I wanted added, EPIX and Reelz HD. And the fact that the switch over saves me money even with an ETF from D* just made it practical to do. I'll save about $40/month avg over the 1st year. After that the price differential at the level I want is only about $3/month. That comparison not counting the various freebies and discounts I can get over time with either.

It is also very nice to have an EHD that actually has real value as an archive device. Never could figure out why D* chose to do EHD the way they did.

When I switched to D* about 18 months ago it was because of my son wanting NFLST and was willing to pay for it. Now he doesn't want it any more and D*'s HD channel lineup fits my viewing pleasure better.

No complaints with D*, they gave me good service, some good discounts over and above the new customer ones and their equipment worked solidly albeit much slower than the Hopper. I think D* still has the best search functionality, and for quick recording setup they can't be beat.

And one thing D* does that E* no longer does, is they take the old equipment back without me paying for shipping. Frankly that is a feather in D*'s hat!

Just an FYI, if for some reason your son or you decide you want NFL Sunday Ticket in the future, and you have a PS3, you can now get NFLST on the PS3. Since it is basically recorded and transmitted streaming, with some compression, the picture quality isn't as good as what you get on DirectTV, but my wife got it for me as a birthday gift so I could follow my Bears and it works fine. Expensive though, same cost as getting it on DTV.

Anyway, just a FWIW.
