Realigning my dish

I recently had some work on my siding done, and in the process my dish was knocked out of alignment. I'd like to try fixing the alignment, but I have never messed with the dish before. I've looked around the web and haven't found any good info. Basically, I just want to know how do I make adjustments?

It's Possible that the Dish it's self is Bent- that would make it impossible to re adjust.

Please list your receivers and the dish type that it shows in the system info.
To see the info, press and hold the Info button on the remote until the system info comes to the screen.
The receiver model number is right there.
Now choose more info and scroll down a few pages / screens worth. The dish type will be listed there.

"Knocked out of alignment" could mean almost anything. More information (if available) would help. Can you determine if it was just moved left/right (rotated on the mast it is mounted on), or did the mast itself also move? If the former, go to www.dishpointer.com and find your location. Put in the type of dish that you have and it will show you what direction your dish should be pointing. Move (rotate) the dish to that direction, then going VERY slowly, adjust the dish left or right up to 10 degrees either direction. By "VERY slowly" I mean move the dish maybe a 1/4 of an inch, pause, check for signal, move it another 1/4 inch, pause, check for signal, etc. If you get lucky and find a signal, then you need to adjust for maximum signal.

As jimmie57 said, knowing the type of dish you have will help.

Or, make life easy and just call DirecTV and have them send an installer out to fix it.

Search YouTube and you'll find some good videos showing the process. This assumes, of course, that the dish itself wasn't damaged.

Now go to Menu, Settings, Satellite and choose Signal Strength

Give us the readings on the 99c, 101 and the 103ca and 103cb satellites.
This might tell us how far off it is now.

99c, 103ca, and 103cb are all 0s.

101 has some that are in the 50s or 60s. The rest are 0.

Did they remove the dish and reattach it? IF so , you can try to re-align it but I suggest you call for service-When you call start with the signal levels and they will dispatch a tech to fix it.

No, they did not remove/reattach it. It is on the roof, but they were fixing the rake board that is near the dish. Somehow in the process, it must have moved.

Perhaps they Un hooked a cable and did Not reconnect it all the way? ? or Put a Nail through it or crushed it?

The cable appears to be connected correctly and I don't see any damage.

The 99 and 103 sats are a little bit lower in the sky than the 101. If they leaned against it, then it is probably pointing to high in the sky.
If you want to adjust it yourself and you know where to loosen it to move it,
you will need a helper to relay signal strengths on the 101 sat to you as you slowly move the dish to improve the readings.
After you get it the best you can get, then you will have to do the side to side and get it as good as you can.
At that point you should have signals on the 99 and 103 sats.

Some people can do this and others can not. From all that I read it is $50 for a realignment if you do not have the protection plan and well worth it.

No - in DC where the OP is located 99 is the highest, then 101 and then 103. If he were on the west coast, 99 would be the lowest, then 101 and the highest would be 103.
My high school geometry tells me that the tilt setting is setting the dish so the plane of the LNBs is parallel to a line drawn between the three satellite locations. In simplistic terms, that would mean that if the 101 signals are great but 99 and 103 are not, there's a tilt problem. If 99 is good, 101 is so-so and 103 is poor (or the other way around) it's mainly an elevation issue. If all of them are poor, it's probably an azimuth issue, although a big error in elevatiion can have the same effect..

I would start by peaking 101 then checking the others. Make very slow azimuth (left/right) adjustments and try to get the 101 readings all in the high 90s.

Once you have that, check 99 and/or 103. You might be able to peak those, but it is more difficult. There is a dithering procedure to use to achieve peak reading, which is how you should proceed. But you can probably get close just manually aligning.

If you can't get good solid high readings on 101 by adjusting azimuth, then you may need to adjust elevation and re-azimuth.

Be careful though, it would be really easy to get it even farther out where you have nothing on any satellite. If you are not comfortable trying all this, call for an installer.

OK, so I played around with it a bit, and I've made some progress. Seems like everything is working. Here are my signal strengths. Most seem good, but there are a few that are low. I am in the Washington DC area. Can someone take a look and tell me if these are good enough?

Also, while I was looking at it, I noticed that a few of the bolts that anchor the dish to the roof were missing. I think this is due to when the siding folks did the work on the rake boards. I had a bit of exposed wood that was overhanging longer than it should be. They trimmed it...and I think that those bolts were attached to the part they trimmed, so they removed them. I don't think it would be possible to add the missing bolts without moving the entire dish. The dish seems stable enough, so I am thinking of just letting it go and seeing what happens on a windy day.... Any reason I should be concerned? Pics attached.

You did a good job.

If you add bolts to the base, check the signals again since the sats are thousands of miles away and as you have found out already, a tiny bit makes a big difference.
