The Game Lounge service offered through DIRECTV will be discontinued starting Mar 6, 2013.
Customers currently subscribed to Game Lounge are being notified of this change in service through e-mail and an outbound automated telephone recording.
All opinions expressed are my own and do not reflect the views of DIRECTV, National Electronics Warranty, or any other entity that I share affiliation with.

Guess that's why the Game Lounge icon in the extra's menu has been missing lately.

See post My Setup for configuration info.

It was kind of a novel idea for a while but with the number of devices offerings games including TV's it was only a matter of time..

The only time I've been in the game lounge app is if I get on the channel by mistake.

Who cares? How do non-Game Lounge customers benefit from it going away?

Guess it has to free up some transponder space from the 101 sats.

Doubt it's enough to matter to the number if Sd channels or PQ.

Why should I pay for a game subscription when I can find the same games for free online?

Actually it is, the transponder used by Game Lounge has less channels compared to other transponders. The background graphics and music on Game Lounge is one linear channel along with additional data streams for the various games that overlay it.

Let me clarify. Nobody cares about new SD, so it doesn't matter. And they won't rebalance the entire system to improve PQ because SD doesn't matter.

I would bet that the close to 50% of DIRECTV customers that are SD only might care if it got them a new channel they wanted.

They still add channels in SD too, last year they added Cinemoi, Disney Junior and TWC SportsNet. If they ever come to a deal, CSN Houston, Northwest, Philly, Pac 12 or the future Dodgers network, they'll likely be added in SD too since there's no way they would agree to HD only distribution. Possibly even the Longhorn Network and that ABC News/Univision joint venture if it's included next time their contract comes up for renewal.

Plus there are some SD only channels that are still out there like MTV Hits, MTV Jams, mtvU, VH1 Soul, CMT Pure Country, BET Gospel, CNN International, MoviePlex, etc.

I doubt they would do it, but they could also use the space to bring some of the non-Latino Sonic Tap channels from 119 to 101 like Jazz and Holidays & Happenings.
