C31 monthy fee vs H24

Is there a difference in the monthly fee for C31s compared to having H24s with MRV to an HR24? Just wondering if thete is a cost savings with a Genie and clients compared to separate receivers/DVRs

No unfortunately;

Same $6.00 per month lease fee in addition to the fact that like the H24 receiver you can't own one and must return the client whenever you disconnect it or discontinue service.

As has already been indicated the monthly fee is the same. That said, with the C31 and the HR34 combination you do gain the ability to pause live TV at the C31 which you do not get with an H24.

Isn't this supposed to be addressed in a future firmware release?

The difference is in the hardware arrangement, rather than the firmware (which is also different, but only as to support the hardware/physical differences).

The C31, using RVU, more or less emulates a Genie tuner remotely. It does not have a tuner or many of the normal receiver 'guts' like the H24 or H25. It does not work without a Genie.
However, the advantages of commandeering a tuner from the Genie are that you have a live buffer (for rewinding live TV), and not only access to the recordings on the Genie but also the Series Manager to collaborate recording scheduling between the Genies 5 total tuners.

The H24/25 has none of these features, and likely never will.

How about if I have an RVU enabled TV? Is there a monthly fee for that? I'm guessing yes, even though D* then has no hardware outlay and I own the RVU client.

Completely true. I'd prefer that they bring the service to my house and then let me divide it up from there as much as I want for one flat rate. But that is not their model - and that's fine - I need to deal with/adapt to it. Just glad I don't have to pay the electric company for every electric outlet in my home.

Yep, "...used to..". How about a model where I pay based on the number of televisions actually turned on at any given time? That would help me get my family to turn off the TV when they leave a room! :)

On the phone front - we've cut our landline - which means we're back to paying for every phone. :lol:

Don't think the electric companies aren't already scheming on how to do just that.
Wouldn't surprise me if Time Warner and their ilk come up with a way to determine how many of their customers computers and devices are accessing the internet at any given time and charge you accordingly.

When I was stationed (USN) in Scotland, we used to have to pay a license fee for each TV in the home. Around 25 pounds ($60) per year. They (Gov) had little vans that used to drive around with equipment that could find any TV's that were on in a home. Don't know if they still do that or not.

They do, and the cost is higher now. Even a blind person getting a 50% discount pays over $100 use a year. If they have a black and white tv, they pay $40.

I think the BBC is in charge of enforcement. Radios are now free (used to also have a fee).
