I had high expectations, only to be kicked in the chin with a 40 minute documentary and 2 minutes of boring combat.

I set the timer, fast forwarded through most of Episode 1, then deleted the timer. Very boring.

If the second show is anywhere near as boring, it is gone.

I'm willing to give it another shot. I still prefer the old school robot show. Was battle bots it? They weren't enormous, but they were all built by individuals and much more diverse, with free range movement.

Yes Battlebots was the one of the most recent ones (late 90's early '00s). I was wondering what this show was going to be like and from the few seconds I saw it looked like they tried to make Real Steel into a real show.

I think Robot Wars was the first of the genre, brings back memories of college watching those shows at night with a big group of friends.

Yeah, Robot Wars was a lot better, a lot more realistic. And "Real Steel" is a surpisingly good flick BTW.

I know it's different than the shows being discussed, but do y'all remember Junkyard Wars? Man, I loved that one.

....and it's originator "Scrapheap Challenge".

The best of the 'battle' shows was, IMO, Battlebots. Robot Wars (with the guy from red Dwarf) was ok but I didn't like the fact that it was one homemade robot against a gauntlet of "house robots". Just seemed unfair from the get-go. I preferred the one-on-one Battlebots format.

You and me both.  Some time ago, Battlebots was supposed to return on ESPN but that fell through.  They evidently had the college tournament but couldn't sell commercial time and so it never aired.

Heads did not pop off but they where bent in half.   This happened a few times when the robot doubled over.

Last night matches were good. Only the final to go. Crash & Steam Punk.

Scorpio got a bad draw in Crash. That protected midsection really saved it, or I think it would have crumbled (which, it still technically did, just wasn't a KO). I'm taking Crash in the final, because I don't think Steampunks strengths will be a big advantage against that rollcage.
