Put DVR Recorded Shows on My iPad

Is the Nomad the only way to get recorded shows on my iPad? Is that all it is really good for? Would AppleTV be able to do this?

The nomad is the only way, yes. That is what the function of the Nomad is, copying your content to a portable device so you can watch it when you're away from home.

AppleTV will not play DirecTV content directly. I'm not sure if you can play nomad converted videos on an AppleTV from an iPad via AirPlay or not.

nomad does not work with Apple TV either. Video cables work though.
