Some may remember I moved the PVR 508 from the Den out to the garage/workshop to use when working. Last fall I had it deactivated due to the cold winter months. Today, while working on my garden tiller I had the analog TV on and was watching channel 240, which is a sports channel. The channel went blank and a message on screen states that my smart card has been deactivated. I would guess Dish has finally removed the 508 from service, which they promised to do.

Did you call and reactivate the 508 or did you connect it and it was working? It could be that it just received last falls deactivation signal if it hasn't been actively connected to AC power and a DISH signal.

If you disconnected/turned off the receiver prior to them sending the deactivating signal, it probably just now is reaching the receiver after having it on for awhile.

Last fall I had Dish to deactivate the 508 so I wouldn't be charged the $7.00 monthly fee. However, after Dish did the deactivation I still could watch many channels that wasn't subscription. One of those was the 240 sports channel. The receiver was never disconnected from the TV or any coax removed. I had been watching TV in the garage/workshop the past few days without any message stating the smart card had been deactivated. My assumption here, would be that Dish removed the 508 from service.

Just went out to the workshop and here's what the message says. ATTENTION 005. Your smart card does not currently have authorization to "view or purchase" this program. Please wait or channel up or down.

Call DISH to add this 508 back on your account. You will get an answer and possibly an offer for a free 512 as a replacement if it was deactivated. Either way your free viewing is over.

Too many 501/508/510 devices still in service, for sure a million; don't mix your card's deactivation and mass "exodus" of the model. It cannot done by one night.

I got the same message a few months ago from my 508...just unplugged power for a minute, powered it back up and everything worked normally again...no more messages in several months...

Sometimes I think the receiver mis-reads the info on the smart card..

240 is Pursuit TV and is a channel in perpetual free preview. I'm surprised that your unsubscribed receiver still received the channel. I expect unsubscribed receivers to receive "free" channels but not "preview" channels.

I can see it ... as advertising/enticement to reactivate.

I hope it works that way for when I kill mine in a few months.

I see in your post that NASA is no longer free. Years ago when I installed my dish, it was one of the few channels that I could receive before I activated my receivers.

Mr. James Long, I was surprised also when I had the 508 deactivated and could view any "free" channel, and those that Dish gives out "free" each month. Must be a glitch in Dish's push button control panel.

BTW, I might buy a 311 receiver off Ebay...(One with no balance owned) and connect it to the garage/workshop TV. What is the monthly fee on this? $7.00?
I now have a VIP211K and VIP211 I'm paying $7.00 for the extra VIP211 as a solo receiver.

311 is solo type, so it's the same $7

There was a time when all the "preview" channels were available on unsubbed receivers. That changed at about the time when DISH introduced the Family Package. Preview channels were then made available only to AT120 and above subscribers (to avoid delivering "non-family friendly content" as a free preview to people who picked the family package).

It is probably not a good idea to let unsubbed receivers get HBO and other channels.
