Its the protection plan premier, directv is not going to give out free receivers every two years for the cheaper other two-thats one of the advantageous for having the 3rd highest one. Like if the customer has the other 2 the offer is not going to appear in the order management system. The OP must have the ppp for the installer to mention that.

Better take another look at your training docs.

Last word was May 16 this rolls out. It was not specified if it was rolling out to the entire country at the same time or not.

Upgrading is going from one receiver type to another. Getting a newer model is updating not upgrading. The free upgrade is meant to have more advanced equipment in your home, not changing from an HR23 to an HR24.

For what it is worth, I have not had a protection plan since 1994. Why? If my equipment does not work, then I do not need D*. It's that simple. I guess it is the advantage of having multiple media providers in my particular area, and the fact D* prefers the revenue from my subscription for their service. I treat all service providers equally. I have AT&T DSL, and they want to charge me for replacement equipment, but that has not happened either.

Still, I am not gonna insure other equipment in my house to qualify for this. Sure its easy at that price point. Thats a ton of money to spend on insurance.

If its owned then No the upgrade equipment will be leased

That is not how the PP works now for defective equipment. Why would I let them upgrade me to leased for free and then not have owned equipment? No thanks! I have mostly owned equipment for a reason.

That is a great point and make me question this more. We have all been told numerous times they cant specify what HD DVR we will get. If this were true as most are hoping, they would have to be able to specify model number.

I can see it working this way. Replace defective owned with same class owned. Upgrade an owned box to new higher class box, leased.

I wish we could upgrade in the same class. Would love an HR44 (or higher).

If it winds up working this way, I probably wont ever do it unless its one of my leased receivers. At some point I plan to phase all my leased equipment out. A owned HR34 will be expensive so it may be some time before I have all owned equipment.

I qualify for an upgrade to a genie on May 2nd. I was told that any of my equipment will qualify. But I might keep what I have, and just add the Genie. They will have to upgrade my swm, and run a cable to one of the bedrooms. I was told there was no charge, but I expect to pay for the new cable, depending on how it is run. I have 4 tuners in all plus the Genie would be 9.

But this is in Texas. That's how the Navy Chief Petty Officer from Kingsville, Texas was able to get his HR34.

Wish they would enable some way for us to move items in our playlist to another receiver...

If I have a 50% full DVR of things that I haven't watched yet, right now I would just

lose them or have to rerecord them(assuming I have to turn in the receiver if I upgrade)...

That is the one big issue that I'd like to see happen with DTV in conjunction with the external HDD issue incompatible (married to the boxes) with new boxes.

Some clarification on the changes coming to the Protection Plan. This information was communicated to Protection Plan subscribers through bill inserts or e-mails. The notices started March 6th.

  • The following changes are scheduled to take effect starting May 16, 2013:

    New Benefits
    • One equipment upgrade to an HD-DVR, TiVo HD-DVR, or Advanced Whole Home DVR (Genie and clients) every 2 years at no additional cost (beyond the monthly charge).
    • No fault coverage for unintentional and accidental damage from handling the DIRECTV system.
    Monthly Fee
    • The monthly fee increases $2 from $5.99 to $7.99.
      • Note: Customers who have had Protection Plan for less than 12 months have a price protection, and they will receive a $2 credit on their bill until the 12 month period ends.
