Can I plug in an IR repeater in the back in my HR34 to extend the signal to the remote?

Yes.

Usually it is easier to use RF but if you need IR, it can be done.

I ended up ordering one of these from Monoprice.  Is there anything that I need to do in settings?

The gizmo you linked to is part of a three-part solution (detector, driver, emitter) and as such, will not accomplish your stated goal.

Are you sure you can't use RF mode?

I use a Harmony remote to control my gear.  I guess that I will need to get an RF/IR remote?

I have an external IR repeater with the receiver in an open space and some wired transmitters placed inside the cabinets where the equipment is.

I was using a Next Generation IR extender system with great success, but no longer need it.

I'm sure Directv can't wait to get their hands on your unit.

No, you can use your Harmony, you just need to get this instead of the IR receiver you got.

Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn’t drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, "It is better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver."

I have a Logitech IR Extender that I haven't tried in years.  It fail to work with the Time Warner box.  Maybe I will go find it and try it with the HR34.
