Tried to like "Neighbors" but it wasn't funny. But I loved "Don't Trust the Beach" (killed) and "Whitney" (killed) so go figure...

To tell you the truth, it took a few episodes to really understand how complex this great comedy is. It really found itself after the 3rd or 4th episode

I agree. It was a bit of an acquired taste. At about ep 2 I'm thinking I probably won't make it to ep 4, but then there are these little brilliant surprises of really clever insight and biting social humor that just eke out unexpectedly. Sometimes its important to try to put our expectations aside and let them win you over. In a case like The Neighbors, it is definitely worth it. Somewhere in that writing staff are some really funny writers who know how to make me laugh, even with high-concept idiocy like The Neighbors.

 

In probably no other way is it like The Office, but it had the same effect on me; at first I thought Michael Scott to be a completely insufferable d-bag, but then they fleshed him out, and you began to realize that there was something of real substance in there struggling to get out. That was all it took to hook me, and I lasted with complete allegiance to the entire Michael Scott era. The post-MS era was just embarrasing, but its over so no other comment, other than Ellie Kemper needs to be on my TV regularly.

 

There is also the "finding itself" factor, as OldSchool points out. Star Trek, TNG is a good example; that show didn't find itself until the third season, and those folks really didn't do their best work until late in Deep Space Nine. The same can be said about two other iconic shows, Buffy TVS, and X-Files. But once a great show gets a head of steam up, it can be pretty fantastic, at least for a few seasons.

 

There is also the "pilot" factor. What you need to do to get a show on the network may be somewhat different than what you need to build and keep and audience. Also, the pilot is typically shot sometimes 18 months before ep 2 ever sees the light of day, and creative types usually have a lot of time ti tinker; they typically make changes that are improvements which start to bloom in newer eps as things settle down.

 

The opposite is the sophmore slump, where a good series has a bad season. Revenge is a great example of that, and Rescue Me had a couple of lean years, and so did CSI. The first season of CSI:NY was so dour looking, with its cool-blue color temp effect, that by the time those eps aired in rerun, they were completely retelecined to look fuzzy-warm and yellow. But they survived that and for 8 more seasons.

And to top it all (for me in my house in the stix), it's streaming well on my under 3 Meg service. Had overlooked this one.
