Hello folks. I'm wondering if I can add an H24 to my WHDVR. I currently have an HR34-700 and an H24-700. I have a slimline dish and a SWM ODU. Is this enough information for one of you experts to tell me if I can add another H24? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

it appears you have a SWM LNB that supports 8 tuners and so far you have 6. There should be no problem adding that 7th tuner. Where are you getting this H24 from?

@peds48 I haven't chosen one yet. Where is a good place to get one?

if you qualify for a free receiver, DirecTV is the best source, although they cannot guarantee an specific model, however if you have to pay full lease price, solidsignal is your best source as you get to choose the model number and they are new and not reburbished

Although after researching the receivers a little wouldn't I be better off getting a Genie Mini?

depends on what you like best. The Mini Genie takes a tuner from the Genie whenever it is on, however you have FULL DVR capacity to include DOD. if you get an HD receiver, this receiver will have a tuner of its own thus not "stealing" a tuner from the Genie, but DVR capabilities are limited to playlist watching and recording to the Genie and only trick play when streaming from the Genie.

It depends on what is important to you Either unit can play recordings off the Genie. The client allows you to use trickplay functions of live TV but it ties up one of the Genie tuners. A receiver is completely independent unless you are playing a recording.  Also in worst case if the Genie dies a receiver will allow you to watch TV while waiting for a replacement

What are the disadvantages of "stealing" a tuner from the HR34? Less HR34 functionality?

if you are watching live TV on the Genie and someone else is watching TV on the client, you will only have 3 tuners spare to record. I am a tuner hoarder and like to keep all the 5 tuners for myself..... ;)

I think I see what you're saying. In that scenario I could only record 3 additional programs?
