Please use this thread to discuss your feelings about upcoming national HD channels.

This thread will not be as tightly moderated as the rest of the site, but here's the tradeoff...in exchange for being able to rant a bit more, you can be assured that absolutely no one at DIRECTV will be using this thread for reference.

You can ask for all the new HD you want, but DIRECTV's marketing department knows that the 100-150 contributors to this thread are only a small part of the nearly 20 million U.S subscribers (36+ million world wide).

*Please remember that all forum rules are still in effect.
*Please do not "bump" this thread.
*Other threads that do nothing but anticipate HD channels for which there is no information will be closed.
*This is not a DIRECTV vs. Dish thread, there are other threads for that.

If you have any questions as to what belongs in this thread or an individual channel thread please read the latest DIRECTV Programming Forum Rules (Link).

Please note there have been changes to the DBSTalk User Agreement so please review it (Link).

Since it costs 2.4¢ to produce a penny, my 2¢ worth is really 4.8¢ worth.  That 4.8¢ is my own and not the 4.8¢ of DIRECTV, Dish, or anyone else for that matter.

My prediction is Retroplex, Indieplex, and Movieplex since deals are already in place for those.

I haven't kept track: Will Starz Entertainment LLC be launching MoviePlex in a linear high definition?

When it comes to premium-movies programmers, that particular channel along with applicable remaining Encore screens, as well as Showtime Family, are needing to go HD.

SEC Network does not even launch until 3Q 2014, so it does not belong in this thread.

GSN in the first three?  HSN and QVC in the first five?  I do not think so.

NON-PREMIUM CHANNELS THAT DIRECTV DOES NOT CARRY AT ALL (30):

  • MavTV
  • Military History Channel
DirecTV added MavTV in SD about a month ago.

Have we had any confirmation that Military History Channel HD even exists? AETN has no mention of it being available in HD in their launch forms, marketing info or tech data. The few forum posts I saw about it were vague and they could have easily confused it with Military Channel HD which did launch around the same time those posts were made.

RSN CHANNELS THAT DIRECTV CARRIES IN HD PART TIME (????):

  • Fox Sports Kansas City

24/7 HD versions of FS Kansas City and the other subregions (i.e. Indiana, New Orleans, Oklahoma, Carolinas, Tennessee, etc) don't exist. What Fox does is require the cable headend to have a special receiver that is hooked up to every satellite used by Fox Sports and then remotely switch the receiver between the feeds and insert the Kansas City logo. Most of the time they are showing Fox Sport Midwest, whenever something local for Kansas City is on they are switched to one of the alternate feeds, whenever Fox Sports Midwest has something that isn't available in Kansas City, they are switched to a base national feed. This happens seamlessly so the cable viewers get all the content on the same channel.

For the areas that are in multiple territories but only have one RSN (i.e. they can get both St. Louis and Kansas City teams) they use the Plus channels. Where the cable system puts it can vary from a dedicated standby channel, a local access channel, a local news/sports channel, the scrolling program guide channel, or even pre-empt other channels like C-SPAN.

For areas that have multiple RSNs like Fox Sports Tennessee and Sports South, if there is a Braves game on Fox Sports South that's also available in Tennessee but the Predators or Grizzlies are playing too, usually Sports South would carry the Fox Sports South game locally. If all 3 teams are playing at the same time they start using the Plus channels locally.

In some cases the localized versions can even jump territories. i.e. Kentucky is served by Fox Sports South but portions are also in Pacers territory, so cable systems in those areas carry some Fox Sports Indiana produced Pacers games on Fox Sports South. The same goes for the Fox Sports Cincinnati produced Reds games on Fox Sports Indiana. This is also why on DirecTV you occasionally see Pacers games on one of the RSN alternates near Fox Sports South in addition to the dedicated alternate for Fox Sports Indiana on channel 673 and why some Reds games appear on channel 673 in addition to Fox Sports Cincinnati on channel 661.

In cases where the cable system is truely served by multiple regions the cable system carries multiple RSNs. Like here in NEPA some cable systems have YES, SNY, CSN Philly and Root Sports Pittsburgh. When the Mets were still on MSG and FSNY, some of them also carried a hybrid version of MSG called MSG Zone 4 which left out the locally blacked out Rangers, Knicks, Islanders and Devils game and aired Mets games from both MSG and FSNY as well as some national FSN programming at the time like the Best Damn Sports Show and TNA Impact. After the Mets left most cable systems dropped it and replaced it with SNY except for the extreme northeastern parts of the market which can still get the Rangers and Knicks games.
