Microsoft shutting down MSN TV this September

Just after celebrating the service's sweet 16th, Microsoft has announced it will be shutting down MSN TV on September 30th. To help ease the transition, Redmond is offering current subscribers free access to MSN Premium through December 31st. After that, customers will have to pay the standard rate of $10 per month or $90 per year. Naturally, the modern service isn't compatible with MSN TV's defunct hardware........

More here, including a link to FAQ's about the service and a little about why it may have failed:  http://www.maximumpc...tv_service_2013

Personally, I think calling MSN TV an IPTV service is a bit generous. Most video didn't work, or work well, including Youtube.

Webtv (later assimilated to msntv) was an easy, inexpensive way to get on the Internet when the Internet was still sort of "new." I had it from 1998 to 2000 when I was getting online for the first time but didn't want to invest in a computer. It was basically an "Internet terminal" and was somewhat ahead of its time in melding Internet and television content. I was a little surprised to see the service still exists.
All this has happened before. All this will happen again.

On TWiT, Leo mentioned that he actually had a subscriber call into his radio show last weekend looking for advice on a replacement.
