EL SEGUNDO, Calif., (UPI) –  Satellite TV provider DirecTV, based in California, announced it will soon carry DogTV, billed as the first 24-hour channel geared toward canines.

The satellite service said DogTV, which is currently available via Cox Communications and Time Warner Cable in San Diego and online and through Roku devices for $9.99 per month, will be available on DirecTV starting Aug. 1, Variety reported Tuesday.

PTV Media, the creators of DogTV, said a team spent four hours developing and testing programming designed for dogs. The three to six minute clips on the channel fall into three categories: relaxation, stimulation and exposure, which aims to acclimate dogs to experiences such as riding in cars with toddlers.

“The dog-approved programming content was created to entertain, relax and stimulate stay-at-home dogs, so owners don’t come home to ripped-up couches, shredded magazines or a favorite pair of heels chewed to bits,” the company said.

Wait, they only spent four hours to both develop and test the programming? Must have been a very short focus group and lots of repeats.

From Variety:

Release the hounds: DogTV — touted as the first TV network aimed at man’s best friend — is a real 24-hour channel that will be unleashed on DirecTV starting Aug. 1.

For the first two weeks of August, DogTV will be available for free to any DirecTV subscriber. Pooch owners who register to subscribe before Aug. 10 will receive 30 days free through mid-September, after which the channel will be $4.99 per month. In addition, those signing up for the early-dog special will receive a PetHub dog ID tag and $10 coupon codes for PetBest.com and Dog Is Good.

Now some other types of pet owners will be up in arms.
But on a side note, I had a friend who rid leave his tv on during the day for the dog, one day the power went out and the dog tore the living room up !!

What about cats? They need their own channel too. My cat is upset over this and just threw up a hairball.

Well Directv charges a minimum of $34.98 to receive Dog TV, since you can't only subscribe for $4.99.

If people don't subscribe to pay TV some may see $9.99 as a value. I don't though, But just saying!

Just for clarification, this is not going to be in basic packages, right?????

Will this be like the baby first channel where they add it to all basic packages when they want an excuse to jack up prices/reshuffle packages?

Its bad enough that I have to get like 5 disney channels and god only knows how many Nickelodeon channels, don't make me pay for this bull crap too - I just want Sunday Ticket, HBO and maybe 10-15 basic cable type channels...

This story is case in point of why we need ala carte tv across the board.

I'm not one for jumping on the "why did we get THIS channel instead of THAT channel" bandwagon. But I just might look for a seat in this case.
