Sources: NFL, DirecTV Negotiating Renewal, With Talks Still In Early Stages

The NFL has "started renewal talks" with DirecTV around the out-of-market "Sunday Ticket" package, marking "the final major media deal the league has not redone in recent years but perhaps the most controversial and most complicated," according to sources cited by Daniel Kaplan of SPORTSB...

This is a good story for a slow day, but I have it on good authority that the talks have been ongoing for some time. Of course we are all interested to see what will happen when the current deal is up. Other carriers want in on the NFL, and it's not clear whether DIRECTV is willing to pay enough to stay exclusive.

Guess I am out then.  That site does not look like something I want to sign up for.  Sounds like they want to spam the crap out of me with all the stuff they want.  I would not be getting my news from them anyways.  Thanks anyways.

Not much to report other than negotiations are under way (or on going, depending on how you view them).  No word on how close or how far apart they might be.  It's interesting to note that things could change down the road, and that's why I reported the story.

D*'s exclusivity has also eroded a little because of all of the new ways to view games that have popped up in the last couple of years.  The RZ channel offered elsewhere has eroded their hold on subs as well.

This will be fun to follow as it heats up........

IIRC, the current contract runs for two more seasons (2013 & 2014). The start of the 2015 season is over two years away so there's lots of time.

I think the issue is more likely whether or not DIRECTV ponies up again to make the contract exclusive. Judging from forum comments, I suspect it NFLST's value as a drawing card for residential subscriptions isn't what it once was.

I thought it was always the NFL's decision that the Sunday Ticket package had to be exclusive to one provider, because they wanted to keep subscriber numbers for it at a certain level.  They were afraid if everyone could get it from every provider too many people would get it and it would dilute it's worth to bars, restaurants, etc.  Not to mention it would cut down on viewership for local games which would tick off the major networks and could impact future carriage deals they have with those channels.

Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn’t drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, "It is better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver."

To me when they added the Thursday night game, I lost interest of renewing.  I can see 4 games Sunday(3 Fox/CBS and 1 NBC), 1 game Monday(ESPN), 1 game Thursday(NFLN), that's around half the game of a given week w/o Sunday Ticket.  I understand the folks who want to see their team out of market though.  Helps that the Saints and Falcons have gotten better the past 4 or so years.

Not to mention that there are fewer games on Sunday Ticket every year it seems.  I believe the Thursday night games have been increased.  Less games available on Sunday Ticket would have to lower the sub counts too.  I think if the NFL is smart, they will keep it exclusive.  They should lower the price some.  I think they can get more people to watch it at a lower price point and still make the money they want.

Looking at it from DIRECTV's perspective, it gets less exclusive all the time and less of a drawing card for those who can get their fix through conventional channels as kevinwmsn observes.

That was my point.  I still think there is a huge market for Sunday Ticket.  If they would make the price more reasonable, they could still make money from it but have a larger amount of customers carry it.  No matter what, I will have it every year.

keeping it exclusive will only work with dish or directv.  Cable is to spotty and some cable areas will need big time updates to fit it in.

I want CLTV / CLTV HD on direct tv.

Unless you are a big fan of a particular out-of-market team that you have to see every week, I think NFL Red Zone is just as good if not better.  It certainly is more budget friendly.

Agreed and we all know that Dish is way to cheap to get in on Sunday Ticket.  They wont even get in on MBL Xtra Innings and I am glad I am not a NHL fan because the Dish fans cry every year about the lack of HD games available on Center Ice.

It is more budget friendly but a lot of NFL fans want to watch the game and not just the scoring plays.  I personally hate the Red Zone Channel.  I find it a waste of time.  I will watch ESPN at the end of the day for all team highlights or the half time shows on the station I am watching.

I would love to see Directv to continue with offering ST, but not exclusive. I think the costs would be lower if every provider has it as an option.

I think there are larger issues then that.  I think if ST was offered by multiple providers, the local affiliates would get upset as it would increase the number of customers not watching the local game.  That would lower their ad revenue which would not make them happy.  In the end everyone would lose.

I doubt that the cost would be lower. The NFL knows how to make money. NFL ST is a product that carries a specific price and they won't lower it whether it's on 1 provider or 10 providers.

What, that makes no sense, for one there are black out rules,
2 if you are truly an out of market football fan, my guess you already subscribe to directv.

If you think making Directv sign a Multi billion dollar deal for exclusive rights to NFL is winning then I feel bad for all your 21 million customers.
