Subscribe to thread in ios app

I figured it out by accident. I swiped left on the thread title, and lo and behold, another menu came up that allowed me to subscribe to the thread.

I'm using the latest version of the ios app on an iPad 2, and for the life of me I can't find a way to subscribe to threads. I highlight the little gold star in the fly-out bar at the bottom, but it doesn't seem to stick. The gold star is gone the next time I go back to that thread. There is a subscribe button in the upper right when browsing the main thread list in a forum, but that doesn't seem to do anything.

Am I missing something? How do I subscribe to a thread?

Thanks.
