In 2010, DirecTV dropped Comcast/NBCUniversal's G4.

Three years later, with Comcast/NBCUniversal eliminating Style Network to replace it with brand-new Esquire, I've come across that Time-Warner Cable systems have, despite the launch of Esquire, dropped G4. That Verizon Fios will also drop Style Network. After this, who knows who else may be next.

It's bee said not to trust everything at Wikipedia.org; but I'd love to read people's opinions on this. Was DirecTV smart for having dropped G4 [back in 2010]?

From Wikipedia.org @  http://en.wikipedia....ork_and_decline :

On September 9, 2013, news broke that NBCUniversal will instead replace Style with Esquire Network, leaving G4 "as is for the foreseeable future, though it's highly unlikely the company will invest in more original programming".[1] One of the factors was likely Style's distribution on DirecTV, giving Esquire more homes at launch with the Style channel slot than they would have had with G4.

Upon the re-branding of Style Network to Esquire Network on September 23, 2013, G4 was dropped from all Time Warner Cable systems, citing the network's low viewership as "(not a) good value for our customers".[37]Verizon Fios also plans on discontinuing the channel on or after October 1, 2013.

According to a public statement filed by Cablevision to the Connecticut Department of Public Utility Control (that state's utility service regulator) on September 10, that cable provider filed notice that NBCUniversal has plans to discontinue G4's operations as of October 10, 2013.[38] No statements have been given by NBCUniversal as to if and when the network will end directly.

One of the big reasons I think Style changed to Esquire and not G4 was because of what DirecTV did to G4 in 2010.

Considering the neverending bill increases, DirecTV did a service to all MSO's because their move killed off an unnecessary channel, and it's hardly the only one.

If the cost of G4 was more than the revenue DirecTV lost because of viewers that dropped DirecTV because G4 was dropped, then DirecTV was smart for dropping the network.

These are the real questions:

  • Was being dropped by DirecTV the ultmiate cause of G4's demise?
  • Did DirecTV drop G4 because DirecTV realized sooner than other providers that the content change from TechTV to G4 made the network non-viable?
  • Was DirecTV just in a more fortunate position than some of the other providers in terms of when the contract for G4 ended, which allowed DirecTV to drop G4 sooner than other providers could?

Was DirecTV Smart to do it? Hard to tell, because we don't know how many people dropped DirecTV because they dropped G4 (probably not many) or how much DirecTV was paying for it

I never forgave Comcrap for acquiring TechTV and merging it with G4, and then killing off all the TechTV programming.

G4 sucks. Good riddance.

Same here, especially when they fired most of TechTV's personalities only 4 months after having them all relocate.

G4 only got on Directv by buying out Tech TV and that was after comcast droped tech TV that hurt tech tv.

I want CLTV / CLTV HD on direct tv.
