Canceling Starz and Cinemax

I'm on my second year on a two year contract.  I have the Premier package, but I never watch Starz and Cinemax.  I've tried going to the site and canceling those channel, but I can't find a way to cancel.  The site only let me downgrade the package.

 

Is there anyway to cancel Starz and Cinemax without getting ding on my contact?

 

How much would I save if I can cancel those channels.

 

The only premium channels that I watch is HBO and Showtime.  I don't even watch Encore.

You would need to downgrade your package, then add on HBO and Showtime. This would not affect your contract, unless a discount is tied to a minimum package level, though usually they don't require Premier. You should be able to go down to Xtra and add in the Premiums.

 

I think HBO itself is $18, Showtime is $13.

If I downgrade my package, what about the sports package that comes with Premier?

You would have to add the sports pack if you dropped to a lower base package.

From what I have read it appears that you can UPgrade your programming but you can not Downgrade it online by yourself. It has to be done by talking to them on the phone. It appears that they want a chance to talk you out of it. Many times they do by offering you discounts.

Usually if you're just dropping one and maybe two, it's worth keeping Premier in the long run. If you're going to keep HBO, Showtime, and Sports Pack you may not save any money, or, just $5 or $10. 

 

You're going to have to call them up to change it anyway, you might as well call, tell them you want to do, and see how much it's going to cost. They may throw you a discount to keep you at Premier

One thing I hate about Directv. I should be able to add premiums and drop them as I wish, as long they have been active for 30 days. I should not have to call them and talk to some jack wagon who wants to spam a customer already paying a good chunk of money. Its surely one thing Dish does better. You either talk to DIRT or get on chat, and its handled, no talking to the used car dealer...

That's one of the things I like about Dish over Direct.  I can add and cancel any and all programming online.  No chat, phone call or email needed.  

 

And recently when trying to drop a premium, it pops up with a 1/2 price for 6 months offer on all the premiums including multi-sports and BB@Home.

 

That's handy and VERY customer friendly.

 

That said, when I was with Direct when I called to cancel a premium or just juggle them around, it didn't take long and they always offered something to keep them.  Sometimes a big something, sometimes smaller, but always something.

Why wait until the contract is up?  Call and tell them what you want to do and see if they make it in your favor to either not do it or if it isn't then cancel out what you don't want.

 

When I was with Direct during the 2 year commitment period, I called to drop the Premier, they offered $25 off for 6 months making it cheaper to keep than drop down.  I won't say that is the deal you'll be offered, but if your account is in good standing, you should get some kind of offer.

You will not get dinged on your contract but if you are receiving a credit that is tied to your Base Package then changing (from Premier) will probably remove that credit/promo so check your bill for that before you make the changes. Your programming agreement requires a base package of $29.99 or higher per month (Family, Select, Choice, etc.) 

From DirecTV's website: 

 

Order HBO for $17.99 per mo. or Starz, Showtime, Cinemax or Sports Pack for the regular price of $12.99 per mo. and get your second premium channel for only $11.01 per mo., your third for $10 per mo., your fourth for $8 per mo., and your fifth for $7 per mo. (Please note: HBO cannot be discounted).

 

Premier is $124.99 per mo. Xtra is $70.99 per mo. I assume you would not be interested in Ultimate at $77.99 per mo. since you are not interested in Encore.

Xtra + HBO + Showtime = $99.99 ($25 savings over Premier)

Xtra + HBO + Showtime + Sports Pack = $109.99 ($15 savings over Premier) 

 

Of course, I am excluding from the cost above for Advanced Receiver Service (DVR, Whole Home, HD), additional TV fees, HD Extra Pack, any promos or discounts you may be receiving.

Ultimate has a few non Encore channels they should really have an Ultimate with non RSN sports pack channels.


I want CLTV / CLTV HD on direct tv.

Yea a whopping $7

It was better when the included the DVR charge in Premier

Thanks for the suggestion I called and told them I wanted just Ultimate with HBO and Showtime. They sent me over to a "programming specialist" who offered me $5 off of HBO, Cinemax, Starz, Showtime, and Sports Pack for 6 months and another $5 off for having Auto Pay, and then another $3 off (the whole home DVR fee) for a net savings of $33 per month for 6 months.

I was really surprised that they gave that much, but I didn't argue for sure.

Glad to see you got a good deal.  Sometimes a phone call in very nice!!  :)

 

I'm with Dish and getting 1/2 off for 6 months for HBO, SHO, MAX, Multi-Sports and BB@Home.  For the premiums the 1/2 off is off the retail for each channel, so it isn't the buy more save more price being discounted.  Still saving significantly.

 

And with BB@Home, I have all of Starz included as VOD so I don't need to sub to it.  That's great since I rarely watch much on Starz.

Whenever I tried canceling a premium online it would never allow me. Always said I had to call in to do it. Even after the 1 month of having it so I didnt get the canceling fee. Is this something thats common or that only happens to me?

That is how it is for everyone.

 

DirecTV does not let you cancel premiums, or downgrade your package (I think) without calling in and talking to someone.  They do that on purpose because they know a lot of people won't bother to call in and wait on hold etc. in order to do it (just like how most people don't mess with or forget to do rebates).  If the customer does call in and wait on hold it gives their CSRs a chance of talking the person out of the changes.
