It seemed to get up to speed in maybe 5-10 seconds, after which I powered up the 44.  I can wait longer, and probably should.  But that's a different issue to me than how simply turning off and on the TV would make me lose the external connection, right?

There's another thread with someone trying to use a TT Max 5 and it's not working out for him either.  My advice is to try another enclosure.  It seems like the TT Max 5 and HR's don't like each other.

I think that should be a more detailed statement.  It seems like the TT Max5 and the HR44-500 may not like each other.  I'm using a TT Max 5 with one of my HR24's (2TB WD drive) and my HR44-700 Genie (3TB WD drive).  Other than needing to initialize the drive before it would be recognized by the HR44-700, I've had absolutely zero issues with this combination.

I'm one of the ones that wasnt able to get the TT Max5/2TB EURS combo working on either of my HR22's....yet those very same drives are working fine in the TT docks connected to the same HR22's.  The TT Max5 is working perfectly fine connected to my HR20 using a slightly older 2TB EVDS drive in it....

I concur exactly with this. I'm using a TT Max 5 with a 3TB drive on my HR44-700. It didn't recognize it at first but took right off after I created a partition with my PC.

Well, the saga continues.  Rebooted everything once again.  My external drive hooked up with the HR 44-500 fine, and more importantly has remained fine for 48 hours or so....

I've decided from this experience that external drives are mysterious and fickle creatures.  Witchcraft of some sort may be involved :)   I'll just enjoy what I have as long as I have it.  A good lesson in life.
