Trying to wrap my head around all this.

I currently have an oval 3-LNB dish with 2 coax cables running into an HR21 in my house

I want to upgrade to an HR44 because my receiver is super slow and it's driving me crazy

I only have one TV in the house but obviously would like to be able to watch and record different programs at the same time

What is the minimal amount of stuff I would need to make an HR44 work?

Thanks for your help

Does your dish says "slimline" on it?  if it does, you will need a SWM LNB, and a  power supply. done!

However, with the SWM8 you will need to run 2 more cables from the dish to the switch.
