THR22 Rebooting Repeatedly

The THR22 started rebooting on its own at 6:30 PM last night (11/!9/13).  It did 5-6 reboots in quick succession, then worked OK for 30 minutes before rebooting again.  It continued like that the rest of the night.

We've had the THR22 for about 4 months.  I know that, last year, in November, the SD DirecTV TiVo had similar problems.  I thought this might be a variation on that, and checked here and at the DirecTV and TiVo forums, but no one else has asked about this.

I called DirecTV, and was told by the first rep that the THR22 would most likely have to be replaced.  When I asked to be transferred to a TiVo specialist, or Engineering, I was told she could only let me speak to her supervisor.  I was put on hold for so long that I hung up.

I called later last night, and the rep this time said that this was a known issue with the THR22, an issue they'd been aware of for the last 3 weeks.

Anyone else have this problem?

Any suggestions other than waiting for DirecTV to fix this?

If it is a software issue, it's not within DirecTV's direct power to fix it. Tivo has to. I'd think more would be reporting it, but there are probably a lot of THR22 customers that aren't on dbstalk.

I really doubt it's a "software issue".  We would see LOTS of posts here and in the  DirecTV Support Forum if it was widespread.  It's much more likely that your Tivo is overheating, or its hard drive is dying.  It should be replaced.

D* won't guarantee that you will get another THR22 as they say that they have no way to order a TiVo as a replacement.

I have played that game with them. I just tell them that I will just ship their DVR back using their return sticker if I don't get a TiVo then would keep doing it until I get a TiVo replacement. I got a TiVo the 1st time!

If I were you, I'd just go and buy yourself another hard drive and swap it out. If you like to save a lot of programs and movies, buy a large drive, 1 or 2 TB.

Fry's has a 2 TB "Server" drive that is designed to run 24x7 and they are about $114, or just order one on line or Ebay.

Good Luck!

The rep that told you that was wrong, you got a thr the first time because that's the way it works. I was told the same thing when I needed to get my HR34 replaced, the rep told me they couldn't guarantee a Genie, that I might get an HR21. I tried educating him, but dropped it after he wouldn't believe me and just knew that the system would take care of it.

What they can't guarantee is what you'll get in the same class. The THR22 is in a class of its own.

dpeters is correct....if you have a THR22, you will get a THR22 as a replacement, if you have a Genie, you will get a Genie(HR34 or HR44) as a replacement, an HD DVR gets replaced with an HD DVR(HR2x model), and so on and so forth down the line....by my count I think Directv has 6 model lines....

SD receiver

SD DVR

HD Receiiver

HD DVR

HDTivo DVR

Genie

and they would be replaced like for like in the model lines, but not necessarily exact for exact as they feel they are functionally equivalent in any given model line.

An update: The THR22 stopped working altogether last night - no lights,  no noise, nothing.  Never had that happen before with any DVR or receiver, always had lights or the HD whirring away.  I think it may have something to do with the power supply.  The cord feels loose.  (I swapped out the cord with the cord from an AM-21, changed outlets, etc.  No change.)

I called D's Retention Dept. and was told they'd send me a replacement THR22 in 3-5 days.  We also have an HR34 and clients, so now I just have to try to remember what I had scheduled to record on the TiVo.
