My conversation with a Samsung live chat support rep, which got me nowhere regarding how to get my remote (DirecTV RC71 or Samsung) to control the volume of my Denon AVR-5700 receiver when using the RVU ethernet Genie client connection. Oddly, the remotes work fine when the connection is via DirecTV STB. And they work fine when the TV is using the internet to access Netflix or other apps. And even with RVU, the remotes will operate the Denon's mute function (and power).

Simone S: Hi, thank you for reaching out to Samsung technical support. How may I assist you?

Visitor: Installed new UN46F6300 as an RVU client with DirecTV Genie. Everything works except cannot get either the Samsung remote or the DirecTV RC71 remote to control the volume of my Denon receiver. They can mute the volume and turn the receiver on, but not control volume up and down. When the TV is set up as without RVU (through regular STB), the remotes control the Denon volume just fine. Using optical output from TV for volume, no HDMI.

Simone S: I understand that you would like to change the volume on the denver receiver using Samsung or cable box remote , Am I correct/

Visitor: Yes, when TV is in RVU mode

Simone S: I am afraid, you need to use the denver remote itself to change the volume on the receiver itself.

Visitor: Denon. Why is that? Is that a known bug in the Samsung RVU client software?

Visitor: Are you familiar with RVU? There IS no box.

Simone S: Yes,  you can only change the volume on the receiver itself.

Visitor: That is a very significant flaw. Will that be fixed in an upgrade software release? Can I talk to a higher level support specialist who deals with RVU?

Simone S: Sure, You can contact the Samsung phone support at 1-800-SAMSUNG (726-7864); they are available Monday - Friday 8:00am - 12:00am EST and Saturday & Sunday 9:00am - 11:00pm EST.

Visitor: I am sure it is a simple fix if the remotes already control the Denon's mute function. Also, when I use my iPhone SmartView app, it, DOES control the volume on the Denon.

Simone S: No, you need to control the volume on the receiver itself.

Visitor: Not true--the iPhone connects to the Samsung TV via WiFi, the TV then puts out an IR signal to the Denon. The Denon itself has no way to communicate with the iPhone. So the Samsung TV IS putting out the correct volume signals to the Denon, but only when it receives a WiFi command from the iPhone.

Visitor: The TV also conrols the receiver's volume when I switch it to Netflix or other apps.

Simone S: I will be right with you.

Simone S: Please note that when you connect the a Receiver or sound bar to the TV, you need to enable the speakers to the external speakers which can only be controlled through the receiver itself.

Visitor: Not true--I am already controlling the external receiver (HTS)through the TV. It works fine with an STB thru HDMI as well as with the network-connected apps such as Pandora, Netflix and Amazon. It is only when the DirecTV Genie is connected via RVU mode (thru Ethernet wired connection) that the remote stops controlling the receiver's volume. You may not be familiar with RVU as it is still fairly new and rare.
