Yawn.

To be fair, between December 31. 1962, and December 31, 1964, a significant change had developed in how we viewed "The American Way" part of "Truth, Justice and ..."

I think there is something to be said about Ed Sullivan having  Bill Haley & His Comets one once (the first rock and roll performance on national prime-time TV) and Elvis on three times in 1956-57 and the The Beatles appearing on three consecutive Sundays in February 1964.

But the assassination of President Kennedy in November 1963 is what I consider to be the trigger along with TV becoming the accepted the medium for delivery of entertainment and information for the 1960's change in American culture and politics.

They will show some Ed Sullivan performances (which I'll watch) but it looks like they'll show other people performing Beatles stuff, too (which I'll skip).

And I wouldn't put Mr. Grohl and Mr. Wonder at the top of a list of entertainers, i.e. "Who's who".

It was pretty well done and most of the performances were impressive, some of them downright great performances.

Not all, though. I don't know who the idiot was that decided Katy Perry should be the one to cover Yesterday. And Adam Levine was pretty weak.

I rather enjoyed this, much more than I thought I would.  However, we prefaced it by watching the DVD of the original Ed Sullivan show.  Somehow, I just knew there wouldn't be a complete performance from the original left alone in its entirety.  There never is when these performances are rebroadcast, with the exception of one during a Letterman show maybe 10 years ago.

Not all, though. I don't know who the idiot was that decided Katy Perry should be the one to cover Yesterday.

Is Katy Perry now regretting what aired yesterday?

The pop star was tapped to sing the classic "Yesterday" on the CBS special The Beatles: The Night That Changed America—A Grammy Salute, and though she seemingly did the song justice, she rubbed some Fab Four fans the wrong way.

Why?

Well, for starters, there's a contingent out there that can't stand when an artist changes the line "suddenly, I'm not half the man I used to be" to "I'm not half the girl I used to be"—a change-up that happens pretty much every time a woman covers the Lennon-McCartney classic.

"suddenly, I'm not half the man I used to be" to "I'm not half the girl I used to be"

Change it to "I'm not half the boy I used to be" and it also loses the meaning.

A boy becomes a man ... and then realizes he is not as much of a man as he was.
A girl becomes a woman ... and realizes that is too many syllables and remains a girl.

Hmmm. It's funny but I don't see a woman using the word "girl" referring to herself as a problem because a group of adult female friends often refer to themselves as "the girls,"  and their “girls night out” implies the company of adult females. Also, a woman may express camaraderie by addressing another woman as girl,  as in "You go, girl!" (However, no guy in his right mind would refer to an adult woman as "girl" except perhaps as his girlfriend.

My problem was with the performance.

Personally I would have liked to have seen somebody like Rihanna take it on. But here's another woman singing the song and as far as I'm concerned Perry's performance doesn't cut it and was a bad choice:

Of course I compare every female performance of "Yesterday" to that of Eva Cassidy which led to my protest here when Carrie Underwood struggled with it on the 2013 Emmys. (Which ultimately led me to start the thread Eva Cassidy: when death doesn't get the last word....

I guess I see Perry and Underwood as over-produced and overrated. But I'm old. :sure:

OK, I have a solution for future covers: Use the word "being", pronouncing it "bean" so the syllable count stays right.

So musical! "I'm not half the being I used to be."... should please everyone except Beatle purists. hah!

I don't see it in the guide yet, but on CBS.com they say it will be shown again, Wed 12th from 8:30 to 11pm.  I was hoping they would, I forgot to record it.

It appears in the TitanTV guide online, which is what usually appears on a network affiliates website. However, the Zap2It Tribune-Media-Services-based online guide doesn't have it yet and Tribune Media Services is where our Dish guide data comes from. I think you can count on the Wednesday 8:30-11:00 repeat.

The only artist that actually belonged on that show was Joe Walsh.

Check out what he has accomplished in his long career.

Too bad they mostly showed other people playing Beatles songs..was disappointed.  The show should have just been a compilation of the Beatles' Ed Sullivan performances and maybe some other footage from Feb' 64.  Would have been a much better show.  Was nice to see Paul and Ringo perform together again, though.

Yes Joe Walsh is just this very unassuming looking and very laid back guy who can easily fade into to the background but then out of nowhere at times when he's performing a rock god just emerges from within him.

I might argue that Jeff Lynne also had a pretty good argument for belonging there as well however.
