I have been subscribing to the Directv Entertainment package. But I noticed on the Directv website that I am now subscribing to the Entertainment Classic package. The Entertainment package is available for $1 more monthly. Does anyone know the difference between those two packages? Thanks.

Go to DTV website and compare what you have to the new name. You possibly have more channels than the new named one does.

Actually I already tried that and at first glance scanning the channels available in those packages I don't see a difference. That's why I was asking. Thanks.

I don't see an "entertainment select" package available.

Were you logged into your account when you compared ? There is no way for one of us to know what the difference is. If you do not have the old classic package it will not show in the list to compare.

Yes I was logged on. It's called Entertainment Classic, not Entertainment Select.

Here is a screenshot of my Directv page.

Edit - I understand that you cannot see the Entertainment Classic package listed when you log on to your Directv account. But I was hoping that someone had heard about these two packages and what the difference is. This seems to be something new and both packages seem to have the same channel lineup. Thanks.

If they are the same, don't switch out. I seem to remember that I had channels that came to my screen that did not show in those lists back when I had a Classic package.

I wasn't necessarily contemplating switching. I merely wondered out of curiosity what the difference between the two packages is. It seems rather strange to me that they would offer two different packages at different prices with the same channel lineup. There are some very knowledgeable people in this forum and I had hoped that someone might know the answer to my question. I realize that this isn't a big deal and there is only $1 difference between the two packages. Maybe I can be too curious for my own good sometimes. LOL.

Classic generally refers to grandfathered packages that no longer exist, at least in their current form. Like I had Xtra Classic, which had a few more channels than Xtra now.

Yes, I am aware of that. But in this case we are talking about two different packages which apparently have the same channel lineup. I wonder if they are planning on changing the channel lineups in those packages but haven't gotten around to it yet.

My guess is there are a few channels different, but the channel lineup tool on the website is wrong.  I know it is wrong about a few channels in the other packages also, a lot of time they are Sonic Tap channels that most people don't care about anyway.

Most likely though right now you are getting an extra channel or two for less money than the new package so you are better off keeping your current package.  One of these days though I have to believe DirecTV will sharpen up and start charging more for the grandfathered packages compared to the current ones, that is the only way they will get most people to change.  Or just drop them altogether and force people to change, but that tends to upset people, where if they change on their own because they think they are getting a better deal then it doesn't upset people as much.

Edit/

Speaking of which, it now appears that Choice Xtra Classic now costs $1.50/month more than Xtra.  I don't think it did before.  Anyone remember which channels are different between the two, as I am now considering changing to the current package if I don't think the different channels are worth $1.50 a month.

Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn’t drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, "It is better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver."

In the past, the guides for what channels you got was unreliable. At one point it told me that I didn't get the Audience Network.

I think this is the right list:

Boomerang

CBS Sports

Chiller

Sprout

I believe Esquire (used to be Style)

NHL Channel

Tennis Channel

This has been a problem for a long time and I wish they would finally get around to fixing it. On the guide the channels that are not carried in your package are supposed to be greyed out. Yet there are some channels that are not greyed out that I can't get as well. It's very annoying.

But regarding my original question. I methodically scrolled through every channel on my favorites list and I can still get all of them just like before. So for the time being I'm not going to worry about it. Thanks for your replies.

I noticed the exact same thing today. That I'm now in the Entertainment Classic package for $1 less than the Entertainment package with a seemingly identical channel lineup. Very strange!

They definitely aren't the same.  I think there is an 11 or 12 channel difference if I recall.  AMC is in Classic, but not Entertainment for example.  There are others that I don't remember off the top of my head.

The Select package that was retired February 9, 2012 that was once a base package back in 2010, 2011? has been brought back also as a current base package. $49.99 regular monthly price for existing customers. Not to be confused with the Retention only Select Classic with fewer channels at a slightly lower monthly rate.

If you reference back my post in this thread the URL of the Select package appears to have the same package ID / SKU # indicating this is the Select that was offered back then at $44.99. Previously when it was in the retired state it was titled in dark grey at the top, where as now its yellow (I remember because I have clicked the same URL back when it was retired as well). For example, Choice Xtra Classic is titled in dark grey since its a grandfathered package. http://www.directv.c...ckageId=1310004

I just reread that package description on the Directv site again and saw something I missed before that might explain it. It says that the Entertainment Classic Package costs $56.99 monthly and here is the important part "for 12 months with 24-MO agreement." Then it lists the Entertainment Package with the same identical channel lineup for $57.99 but there is no mention of a 24-MO agreement. So apparently to save $1 monthly for 12 months you have to accept a 24 month agreement.

To me that definitely sounds like a ripoff. It doesn't seem worth it to have your agreement extended for 24 months just to save $1 monthly for 12 months.

I would say that is very likely an error on the site, if you notice in my screenshot above in post #17 Select has the same line below the price as well. You have never in the past that I can remember had to enter into a new contract to downgrade/upgrade a base package... Normally the "for 12 months with 24-MO. agreement" line is only shown on the package pricing page for new customers.
