James - you mentioned earlier that Dish only has room for 4 more HD channels on WA with the current setup. Other than putting more SD channels on a single transponder and degrade quality, is there anything that can be done with QPSK to make more space? Or is Dish really stuck with only room to add 4 more HD channels until the 8PSK transition occurs?
They can put more HD on each transponder. There are a couple of transponders with 10 channels, most of the rest have 9. The four open channels reflect moving to 9 on existing transponders (Western Arc). Going to 10 would provide another 11 channels.
They might be able to do some moving around of SD channels and free up a transponder ... but the last couple SD channels added (beIN Sports, Fuse, Sundance, Pac-12, Fox San Diego) ended up on the All American Direct transponder (before AAD went away). If there was free space I'd expect it to be used before going on a transponder that was "leased to a third party".
Beyond that it would be time for harder choices ... for example moving all the Latino channels to 8PSK and losing any customers who do not convert, or adding channels on Eastern Arc only.
DISH does not seem to be pushing hard to convert to 8PSK ... so I suspect that 10 channels per transponder will be the answer. I hope the older receivers (211, 622) can handle it.
