Based on him having some letter C logo....if that's a college logo I don't recognize it. If he's a fan of a small school that's generally not making on TV but requires WatchESPN, I can see why he'd say that. If you're a fan of a major conference team this isn't an issue for a major sport (or even for some major conference teams if that conference doesn't have a network yet like the ACC or SEC until August)

UConn, I believe.

There is more college sports on ESPN3 than you would think. Even non-conference Big Ten and ACC basketball games.

They recently added ESPN3 to Roku. PQ is not very good but if it is the only way you get to watch some games you want to see....

WatchESPN only has the games that are on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU.  If you are talking ESPN3 that is internet only and is not on WatchESPN.

Not quite true. WatchESPN, as an app, includes live streaming of ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNews, Buzzer Beater and ESPN Deportes but it also includes ESPN3 games.

The app does. It is very confusing. Espn3 and watch espn are different on the webpage, or they appear to be. But the app has espn3 games. I am looking at it right now on my iPhone. Also, espn3 content on Rokus watch espn channel. I think the amounts differ but it is there.

Their naming is stupid.

In any event, if you have the right ISP, you can get Watch ESPN and ESPN3 regardless of what DirecTV does.  I switched ISPs specifically so I could get Watch ESPN and ESPN3.

How did switching ISP's get you WatchESPN when that is based on your "video" provider? Unless you got like Uverse or Fios and it tricked ESPN.

Uverse is not available where I live, but AT&T DSL is.  I switched to get ESPN3, but there is nothing I cannot get now.

WatchESPN has to be part of the deal or they WILL lose subscribers to Dish or cable companies.  I think we've all known that DirecTV was waiting until contract renewal time to bring WatchESPN to the table; now they HAVE to deliver.

+1 - If WatchESPN isn't live 2 weeks before the World Cup, I'm calling Comcast. As of now, I can't really go Dish, as they carry 0 NY RSNs.

Actually, that was ESPN's doing, not DTV's. They said when they launched WatchESPN that they would not negotiate to add it during any current agreements, only when the agreement with that particular provider was up.

If you stop responding to them or put them on ignore, then eventually they'll go away.

In many states without an NFL franchise, college is king on TV.

Also, to clear the confusion: WatchESPN access is dictated by your TV provider, ESPN 3 access is dictated by your Internet Provider. ESPN has a page that goes into full details on it.

actually, here in bright house land, you must sub to cable tv and receive espn, to receive espn3. even when i had just my internet with bhn, i couldn't receive espn3.

And yet all my uses of WatchESPN (as an app) only ask for one provider....if that is the same, fine, but there is no provision in the apps to use two providers.

I don't trust a word ESPN says about any of this. They have it so clusterf***ed it is ridiculous.

because most of the games will be during business hours in the US - I can't just tell my boss I won't work for 4 hours/day so that i can go to the water hole to watch the games. In the previous 2 World Cups, when ESPN3 showed the games, I'd have them running in the background and if I heard a goal, I'll switch to watch. But nowadays if event is on ESPN, ESPN2 or ABC, usually it is NOT on ESPN3. Confederations Cup matches last year weren't on ESPN3.

ESPN 3 normally authenticated based on the ISP you are using to connect to the network. Having a participating ISP at home doesn't mean you can get it on the road.

Of course the recently announced Disney/DISH deal breaks "the rule" as well as authenticating as a DISH customer will authorize ESPN 3. (I suspect DirecTV will eventually get the same deal.)

I wouldn't be surprised if Disney was essentially saying.  "Wait your turn, we are negotiating with Dish right now, when we are done with them then you can come to the table"   I doubt they would have an entirely different set of staff doing the DirecTV negotiations.

But, now it's DirecTV's turn and they may or may not have the advantage, they know what they wanted to have as a product to distribute, now they know what products Dish got.  They only question is it more or less than what DirecTV initially wanted to go for, pay for.

If this were true, it would be happening over the previous 2+ years. I have WatchESPN, it's nice but I wouldn't go to that extreme. Buffering issues, etc like any other streaming service. I'd call it a nice added value that I use once a month, but it is not the end all be all in my opinion. Certainly not something that people switch over.

I am almost surprised they aren't turning espn classic into espn 3 (what is watch espn now) make espn classic all Video On Demand and make all espn channels available streaming. They are almost doing that now it seems.
