I thought some people were offered HBO for $13.99 a month if you didn't have it and you went to the new two-way interactive ordering process that is now available on internet connected receivers by tuning the premium channel you do not subscribe to.
We had all 4 because of a cold call back in January basically saying add Cinemax and Starz and get both for the price of 1 for 3 months. Wife said yes because she loves Outlander on Starz, and watching it on there is much easier than trying to stream it grey-market through a kodi media center plugin.
Just got rid of Cinemax because there's really nothing on there.
HBO will keep until Game of Thrones is over.
Showtime will keep until Penny Dreadful is over
Starz will keep until Outlander is over. If offered a deal, would consider keeping it because they have a good selection of kids movies on demand.
We also have Netflix and that's 8.99 a month. We'll probably keep that.
Cable with an Arris 6 tuner DVR and 3 clients, plus phone and 40/4 mbps internet without premiums runs about $196 a month, but if coming from dish they will discount it an additional $24 a month for 1 year (but you are committed to a year). So that's $172 for a "triple play" with no premiums. Premium channels are VERY similar to DirecTV's watch more save more pricing above with HBO being the highest.
Currently my last DirecTV bill was $144 and my last cable TV bill (40/4 internet + phone) was $105. Cable charges PA sales tax but I don't recall DirecTV charging that (I'd have to double check on that). So all in triple play WITH premiums is $249 for me. Seems like I'd save a few dollars going to cable at the loss of some technically advanced features (mobile dvr via directv app, web and app based dvr scheduling, live tv streaming to app or website). Cable also only provides the main premium channel in HD and they point you to on demand if you want more HD. They tell me there is no plans to offer the additional screens of HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, Starz/Encore in HD... so to me that kills the value.
I also have a $10 a month refer a friend discount with DirecTV currently, and two $5 discounts (I think one ends in 3 months or so).
All in all I still pay more for entertainment / phone and Internet than I do for the electricity used to power them. Something seems wrong here...
