New Install: Can you drop a receiver a few month into contract?

I have a new DirecTV install question. We're considering getting two DVR's and a regular client receiver. It's possible that we may only use the receiver for a month or so.


Is it possible we can drop the receiver client a short time after the install without penalty financial or otherwise to our 2-year commitment? Obviously, we'll keep the 2 DVR's, we're just on the fence about the receiver and may drop it soon thereafter.


If we cancel the receiver client will DirecTV want it back immediately or is that only when the whole account is canceled?

It's been a few years, but I sent a receiver back about 3 months after our original install.

No harm, no foul.

And they want it back right now.

Yes, you can deactivate the receiver.  your 2 year commitment only obligates you to keep one receiver at the least lower package for 24 consecutive months.  The receiver will have to be ship back to DirecTV

As peds48 notes, you will have to return the receiver. If you want to add a receiver back on to your account after that (any amount of time - weeks or months), you will have to pay the up front cost of the unit and it will start a new 2 year obligation. That is the only downside. So if this is a location that might get intermittent use (say 50% or more of the time), it is better to keep the receiver active and pay the $6 per month even for the months you don't need it.
