Can I disconnect the dvr and take it somewhere else and watch the content without hooking it up it a directv dish?

No. On boot up it will look it will look for the satellite.

 

You need GenieGo.

Oh, for heaven's sakes: it's a reasonable question, and the answer is it varies widely by model and by software version. And personal experiences within model and software. 

 

Best thing to do is disconnect it from the dish, then unplug it and the next morning see what you can see.

Plus the previous board software would check for similar threads when you went to create a new thread. Rookie mistake? Yes. But the TS joined yesterday and this was their first post.

imagine, you could doing remodeling and must redo cabling, eventually disconnecting from dish

If you want to watch content out of home either GenieGo or Slingbox would work.
