Like it or not, your Comcast Xfinity router may now be a WiFi hotspot

(Engadget) - Comcast has just transformed part of Houston into a WiFi commune by activating 50,000 residential Xfinity routers, according to the Houston Chronicle. The new service will give any Comcast client free WiFi access via those "xfinitywifi" hotspots, and is just the beginning of a larger rollout. As revealed earlier, the unloved cable outfit may eventually launch a mobile network using WiFi from subscribers' modems along with leased cellular capacity, possibly from Verizon....

I don't plan on ever being in a Comcast area and we're in a TWC area that wouldn't go to them, but this kind of thing makes me very nervous. They claim it's segregated, but are they sure there won't be a vulnerability that allows traversal? We all know how often they roll out updates to their equipment.

Another reason to purchase your own modem if you are going to subscribe to Comcast and make sure it is a modem only and not a combo modem and router with wifi.

This only applies to there New 1 gig  Router/modems with dual wifi it does not effect your internet speed at home.

With my Republic hybrid cell phone its GREAT ! and for Ipads  or any other device for the wifi web etc etc for expanded hotspot now :) Just use your user name and PW

If you are in a TWC area, there is a good chance you will be Comcast by the end of the year. They aren't going to split off Cincinnati for any reason I don't think.

I'm in the L.A. market.... and I really do not want Comcast, but I don't think we will have a choice in the matter.

[Disclaimer] The definition of "soon" is based solely on DirecTV's interpretation of the word, and all similarities with dictionary definitions of the word "soon" are purely coincidental and should not be interpreted as a time frame that will come to pass within a reasonable amount of time.

We're supposed to be taken by Charter. Not that I plan to ever ditch the local phone company's Internet service.

Nice thing with my ISP, is that I can have a standard router with wifi built in, and which ever i want. So I use dd-wrt.

Completely unsupported of course, but doesn't really mean anything to me.

But, since it's being enabled without customer interaction, they potentially could re-enable it if you manually disable. And my concern wouldn't be speed being affected, it's bad configurations that allow vlan hopping etc though I don't know if that's how they segregate.

It can affect one's home internet speed- the more leeches, the less available for the modem owner. Unless you want to believe Comcast's propaganda.

Well its been on here for along time. And I have a lot of neighbors ! My speed has not changed. In fact it has gone up LOL It is no different if someone adds a modem down the street on the same cable feed. All this does is allows you when you leave your home your wifi to follow you as you go. Jumping from house to house. Oops the sky is falling !

I love this routers, most of the time when I have a weak cellular signal, the customers I am working for have these routers and I get free wifi without having to ask for their password

I get the same reaction from the Doom SAYER's about a natural gas line's  being put in there area underground ! I don't want THAT........... So tired of retards when something GREAT comes along............. and after couple of years ohhhhhh I guess it was great ! But I didn't know ! Sorry lol some things are great and socialism is NOT ! No one is making YOU.... But health care..........ohhhh but we all should pay !!!!!!!!!!!

Just be careful of Sheep in wolves clothing ! Comcast and other Internet providers want FCC to change the internet to a 2 tier system so Netflix has to pay MORE so streaming COST more.

Don't be disingenuous! And I didn't come close to crying Chicken Little. Not nice.

The truth is, whether you notice it or not (esp. after they've increased over all speed), you will be losing potential bandwidth. It may not make a difference in your household.
