Dish Says It’s Interested in NFL Sunday Ticket

(Blomberg.com) - Dish Network Corp.’s head of product management said the satellite-TV company would be interested in bidding on the rights to broadcast the National Football League’s Sunday games if rival DirecTV fails to renew its deal.

“It’s the only exclusive still left for TV content,” Vivek Khemka, Dish’s senior vice president of product management, said today in an interview. “I’d be an idiot to say I didn’t want it.”...

I could see a deal on this causing a lot of flak from customers. I have a friend that chose Dish specifically because of the sports content.

LOL, well, that figures! I am about to switch over to DirecTV in the next month or so primarily because of Sunday Ticket. I've been able to get it the last 3 years via PS3 (no longer an option) and last year they bundled it with EA's Madden Football console game. This year it appears DirecTV is the only option so I've been doing my homework and decided to switch back.

That would SOOOOO suck if I did that in July and in late July it was announced that Dish won the contract!

Directv needs Sunday Ticket for the ATT deal.

Yeah, I saw where AT&T has an out clause that says if Directv does not renew the Sunday Ticket they have the right to back out of the deal. Sounds like they gave the NFL some extra negotiating power!

This could cause a personal dilemma if this happens. MLB Extra Innings only available on Directv / Cable, (Dish doesn't offer it, correct?) and NFL Sunday Ticket only available on Dish.

DTV never directly recovers the cost of ST from ST subs.  Instead, it spreads it among all subs.

My take.  Charlie is merely posturing so as to make ATT pay far more than the current 1B a year for ST.

Perhaps it goes to 2.5B.

DTV forced to hike rates more than Dish, so that Dish picks off some subs.

Since 1995 the average cable bill has increased 122%, while TV consumption per household just 13%.

It won't be until the 2015 season if it happens. DirecTV still has it this year guaranteed.

Ah, OK, so I'd be good for at least the first year of my contract. I seriously doubt Directv would let the contract go, I am betting Dish is making this announcement to drive the price up.

Yeah you're definitely good for 2014.

It's a weird situation with regards to the merger.  AT&T wants Sunday Ticket as a condition of the merger... but I could see it being a sticking point for allowing the merger by the government in terms of "fair competition"...  In other words.  Right now, DirecTV has an exclusive because of being the highest bidder.  That might seem unfair to consumers, but it is the NFL's right to negotiate such a deal.  However, a merger that potentially is anti-competitive that involves a "requirement" of an exclusive deal with the NFL might be viewed as too anti-competitive for the deal to go through.

I'm not saying it will... but I could see it being brought up as an issue for allowing the merger to happen.

I don't know if I care at this point whether Dish ever sees Sunday Ticket, though... especially now with RedZone I get to see the important scoring plays anyway.  Most weekends while I could be missing a good game outside my market, I am usually happy with the games I get OR the RedZone channel now.  Before RedZone I felt more like I was missing out.  Now when I don't like my local game options, I tune to RedZone and leave it there for the afternoon.

GREAT....Another sports tax. Even if I don't want it, I'll get stuck helping to pay for it..... Maybe not the full price, but ALL will end up paying.

This is true of pretty much everything except for the premium channels.  We are all paying for "everything" and we are all paying for channels we would not choose and we are all paying for channels we practically (or actually) never watch.  It has been true since the advent of pay tv really.

I agree. It's one thing to be "interested" in the package; Another entirely to actually bid. I think it's just posturing. PLUS this all assumes that DTV will let their exclusive negotiating period end without a contract which I don't see happening, especially with the ATT clause.

Ironically I would never chose Dish Network because of their lack of sports content.
